We Are Deep In the Heart of Texas

Nomadic seasons of farming adventures with nature thrown in to include; a pinch of family, snippets of friends, counting our blessings, paying IT forward, home school, and the spicy things I decide to rant about.

Old Movie, Memories on a Waning Moon

Last night, I was treated to special gifts.  A beautful, round, waning moon I could see from our upstairs sitting area and memories brought on by watching a movie.  I love old movies, and last night there was a 50th anniversary special showing of
TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD.  Narrated by Dr. Maya Angelou.

_______________________

First off I will say, I love Maya's voice always have and always will.  Her inaugural poem A River, A Rock, A Tree takes me back to simplier times and coming home from a three year tour in Iraklion Air Station, Crete, Greece.

Whole poem found here:  http://poetry.eserver.org/angelou.html

I will never forget hearing the poem and then realizing this woman was one of my instructors through the City Colleges of Chicago, video taped, college course while stationed in Crete.  I never will forget connecting her honeyed voice, huge afro, and wacky clothing to President Clinton's day and my coming home.

It amazes me  but, my young adult life will be forever intwined her writing to my higher learning, self examination - enlightenment.  'I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,' brings me full circle to seeing Mr. Peck last night in the old black and white film.  (I read both books long before I was able to see the movies.)

Dr Angelou's and Harper Lee's books made me realize as a pre-teen bad stuff happens to good people.  Children (or those with a child like minds -- anyone else) are never at fault for abuse nor the lost of innocence.  Racial inequality will sadly -- never be erased nor will sexual misconduct because some humans have the innate urge to 'control' others through violence.

Last night, I looked back in the closet of my childhood; felt my Boo Radley (memory) standing behind me.

Metaphorically, he is all A Rock, A River, A Tree.

Michael was watching To Kill A Mockingbird last night in the bedroom, but I had to watch American Idol. Vast difference, I know, but I'm a fan. Went to bed a little after 9 and he was already asleep (that's the norm, really) so it was lights out for the night.

Hey Randy,

I normally watch American Idol. I loved last year's show. This year, I felt the talent is somehow lacking. So, I went with the classic and hubby watched AI. LOL

I think we may have mirrored relationships.

Tell Michael hellllo!

Moonrise was very orange here last night, pretty, but eerie.

Was tempted to watch To Kill a Mockingbird again, but other things pulled me. I still have a crush on Gregory Peck.. Sigh....

I haven't been that impressed with the talent, either. I have been missing the girls, but I'm pulling for Alex Lambert and Aaron Kelly. I think because they do have good voices and they are the shy types that prolly wouldn't make it otherwise.

Yeah Jill,

The moon was burnt orange here too for about two hours then went marble white by 10. It was beautiful to say the least.

You know Randy,

My fav from last year was Adam Lambert -- except for his obscenely recurrent tongue sightings. LOL

I normally am glued to the AI episodes but this year it just feels different.

FLAT????????? maybe

I've never seen the movie. Yeah, I know, everyone has seen it except me. I loved the book. I love your post too, it brought back many memories for me! Thanks, my Nekkid Soul Sister from across pond.

I love To Kill a Mockingbird! One of my favorite movies of all time. I always picture myself as Scout at the age of 6 or 7 when we had to wear dresses to school. I was such a tomboy and hated to wear a dress.

I also love May Angelou and I know why the caged bird sings.

It is good to find Boo Radlye still standing in the shadows with/beside you. It is always good to have someone watching out for you.
Have a great day.
