We Are Deep In the Heart of Texas

Nomadic seasons of farming adventures with nature thrown in to include; a pinch of family, snippets of friends, counting our blessings, paying IT forward, home school, and the spicy things I decide to rant about.

I Had to Laugh

After reading Judy's post about cooking and childhood memories.  I remembered something from my own child hood that made me smile and I can actually laugh now.

My grandmother, everyone called her Ella; our label was Maw Maw made everything from scratch. She made the best ever grilled cheese sandwiches.  I mimic them sometimes by only using white store bread and velveeta slices.

Every now and again my grandmother though would get those big ole blocks of 'gubnent' cheese as one of my aunt's called it. Well Maw Maw would bring out her trusty cast iron skillet and heat it, plop a pat of butter, while it would sizzle, bread slices laid in it, then the bread with a hunk of gubnent cheese, with another slice of white bread with butter pre-spread.   Well it was after one of these tasty meals, my grand mother was canning one day.  I remember her canner steaming away.

(all we heard was...............)

This huge BAM! and things were falling.  Well we peeked inside to see her kitchen was covered in chicken and dumplings, glass shards about, lids and rings on the floor,  and the canner on the stove still but without its lid.  Seems Maw Maw did not vent the canner so it blew its lid up into the ceiling, made a hefty dent.  I don't recall her canning as often after that.  LOL What I do remember 'grilled cheese sammiches.'

My MIL did the same thing! Not pretty at all!

I love grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup. MMmmm! (idea for supper)

Never had a canner explode, but my Grandpa had a some wine he was aging blow up in the pantry. One of the few times my Grandma made him clean the place, and let him know in no uncertain terms that there was to be no fermented ANYTHING on her preserves and canned goods. Cleanest that pantry had ever been, I think.

Good thing to know. Vent the canner. I haven't seen it happen but I was hired to clean up the peach off the cupboards. It was a lot of sticky work.

Dang that Judy! I was just getting ready to blog myself after reading her rememberance story! Loved yours, Mal, with the chicken and dumplings all over the place! I can see it now, reminds me of something I should write about too. LOL

Hey Sharon, Girlie our adventure with getting the place set up just digs deeper in our pockets.

Cat, It was scarey and there was chicken bits every where. LOL Poor grandpa.

No Joke Jen, It takes forever to clean up such a mess. Nice to see you about.

Yes Sir John, It is yummy though we don't have gubnent cheese.

Kat, Can't wait to read your tale. Have you seen the Geico Pig commercial. I have no "IDEA" why it reminded me of one of your stories. WINK WINK :O)
