We Are Deep In the Heart of Texas

Nomadic seasons of farming adventures with nature thrown in to include; a pinch of family, snippets of friends, counting our blessings, paying IT forward, home school, and the spicy things I decide to rant about.

Is 'handwriting' a dying art?

One thing I have discovered with Saenz is:

He could not read handwriting -- so we now have the letters down (3 hrs of instruction) with practice tomorrow with paragraph style.  Now being dyslexic I understand the difficulties he has and so we have begun slowly.  It is my personal goal of having Saenz be at least able to read handwriting by the end of the month.  I will post a copy of his newly acquired skill here to ensure I don't get off track.

For those of you who are homeschooling what are some of your resources to teach this skill.

I found worksheets here :

Also, I have each of my sons a 'wipeable -dry erase' practice writing flip book sold at WalMart for $3 each.  It makes teaching easy.

What do you all think?  A valuble skill or going the way of Saturday mail delivery?

ANOTHER VALUABLE TOOL

This is through Sylvan and it's a reading program.

"Reports allow you to view and monitor your child's or children's Book Adventure progress. Shown are the most recent quiz results for each of the children linked to your account. To see a detailed report on the progress of an individual child, including all quizzes taken and their scores, click on that child's name."

Yes, he is going to need to learn to read cursive, and at least learn to write his name - he'll be writing checks later on - if there is such a thing then, also sign his credit cards, mortgage etc.

I believe writing a letter is now a lost art, with email and the telephone being so handy.

Can you just imagine if all those patriots signed their names on the Declaration of Independence in printing?

I just finished up writing a bunch of checks to pay bills, and I thought of you. It was just a few weeks ago, I had to teach my youngest (yes, a college student) how to make out a check, he had never done it and nobody covers that in school. I'm thinking, "OMG! he's going to be 21 and can't write out a check!" I never taught him, I just never thought about it. You may want to make yourself a not to teach that in a few years...........
