These two go together like fries and ketchup doncha think? Zephyr and Roux spend their days running from one end of the house to the other. Roux is a mighty 3.5 lbs now, tackles toes which invade her territory, and barks at the ghosts in our home. (Well at least I don't see what she is looking at.)

She is still small enough to take naps in my desk drawer which, just cracks me up.

Now for our year in review; we no longer have goats or pigs. What we did not sell or giveaway found their way into our deep freezer. Yes, we eat goat ( to include only castrated or really young male kids). It just was begining to cost more to keep them as pets than to be able to feed, breed, and sell the goats due to the constant hunt for quality hay, grasses, and supplement feed. This was true of the pigs as well, no one wants to pay what it actually costs to raise a pig to maturity especially since we do not give our animals feed with antiboditics and other chemicals.

We are still raising chickens, turkeys, and guinea fowl. With all the snakes about; keeping birds is the best way to warn of impending reptile visitors. It never fails, if there are birds in your yard -- be it chickens or wild birds; they will let you know if there is a snake near. All you have to do is watch the birds; if you see them swooping about one area in your yard, on a fence constantly moving and fussing then you have a snake near. I have no idea other than the explanation of our dire drought as to why so many snakes in 2011 but, 2012 will be about the same with the La Nina weather pattern. During spring to late summer, I was constantly finding a snake or two each week; luckily only a few were rattlesnakes.

Any gardening this year will be strictly container due to La Nina. Our water well is all we have; we can not have a large garden. Kinda sad but, just a country fact in deep, HAWTER THAN HADES Texas.

The boys and I are still homeschooling. It was the best decision we ever made as a family. We made the choice of working mostly from workbooks instead of buying from Sonlight this year. The cost is the biggest factor but, also because Sonlight is a literature based program. Saenz's dyslexia makes it tough for a reading based curriculum and I had to modify the lessons plans to better match his learning style. Zephyr on the other hand is really taking to reading Dick and Jane books I found on eBay; I could not afford the originals but found reprints.

It is funny, both our boys are learning mathematics at a faster pace. Since being at 3rd grade level in April 2010, Saenz is soaring with me into pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry. Zephyr has been learning his times tables before learning to actually read as a first grader. I make sure each of them understand the use of budgeting and definitely the power of couponing. I think they learn math more quickly because I have a knack for numbers so I am a better teacher in mathematics.

This year has been economically tough on our older sons. We sold Sid our farm truck for work since he needed it for his construction, plumbing job at Lackland AFB. Junior on the other hand has just been having a tough decade with the break up of his marriage and becoming a single parent to Sarah. His car basically died on him; with no way of getting to work without the kindess of others; we made the decision to give him my 31 year old Volvo. I miss having a working vehicle but, that is what you do for family; you scarifice.

Lets see what else can I tell ya'll? In November, we were surprised when my mom and dad, Jerry, (Stinky Toes) drove up our drive way towing my first vehicle, Bubba Junior behind them. I bought Bubba a small Ford Ranger in 1995, can you believe it has less than 100K miles on it? Well back in 2002, we were assigned to rotate overseas to Portugal; we dropped Bubba off at my mom's house and there Bubba sat. It was quiet a shock to see my mom and dad; they only stayed long enough to see our home, drop off the truck, talk to the boys, and then said their goodbyes on their way back home in Alabama. Again, that family scarifice; what a wonderful gift. Thanks Mom and Stinky Toes!

Now hubby, Saenz, and our other sons are working to get Little Bubba running again. I think this is a wonderful way for Saenz to learn mechanics and eventually it will become his first vehicle. LOL! Yes, I have a tendancy to hold on to things for a long time. Heck, my livingroom television was purchased in 2000 and until it dies will continue to stay just where it is. Any way, that is basically it for our year; I haven't had the time to write as much as I had been.

Meet Roux, She Came to Us on Friday

She is part Dashund and Chihuahua. She weighs less than a full soda can and has just tiny little milk teeth which she uses on our ear lobes or finger tips. Right now she is sleeping wrapped in an old towel in my desk drawer as I type. LOL That won't last long but, I forgot how much work babies are to have in the house. I need to nap when she naps eh?

I Never Realized Just How Much

I would hurt. Last year when Banjo was killed right in front of me; I was ached all the way down the core of my being. He was basically my baby. I had a premonition about going outside with him and just felt something awful was going to happen no amount of tears, screams, or calling him to me stopped the event. It took me three days after he was killed to get any sleep, a full month to stop expecting him at the door but, I still look for him as soon as I step on the back porch. I loved him as much as I miss Toad (a stray I raised from bottle while stationed in Greece). Some pets just have a way of working their magic on your heart.

This morning our son called to tell us of a possible puppy in need of a home. Of course, I jumped at the chance because I am ready to love another pet again. I am chalking that need up to Banjo because, he brought much joy in our lives. So say a little prayer that our family will soon be blessed with a fur baby.

She is six weeks old and very adorable. We here are all crossing fingers and feathers in anticipation of this lovely little creature's arrival.

Okay, Have Ya'll Been Looking Taxes?

I know I have! I have been knee deep in reading on the IRS.gov and organizing our own reciepts. No major changes so far this year (2011) though, I believe many changes will be implemented with killing some 'deductions' and 'credits' on individual family' tax bills in or after 2012. Like the child tax credit will go away or be cut in half for those with children under 17. I will let ya'll know if I find any major rehauls of the tax code as I discover them.

Who knows with the dragging of congressional feet in the attempts of getting President Obama kicked out of office. It has been stated since he won the election in 2008 the WHOLE GOAL of Republicans was to make him a one term president. I find this incredible because our leaders were hired to work for their constituents. Instead Republicans block all attempts Obama tries even if it was a Republican goal.

Now this pisses in my cheerios because I have long voted for Republicans as a Libertarian minded person. I believe folks can stand on their own feet for the most part but, firmly support Social Security for those over 62. I also believe in Medicaid for children, the aged, and those with disablities who can not work. Sure there are those who need a hand up when losing a job or some other event in the event of medical necessity but, it should not take 2 years to find a job. I do not believe in permanent welfare for those 'choosing' to pump out children. I also do not believe minimum wage is what the economy (the rest of us) should advocate tossing those on public assistance onto low paying jobs as a solution.

I know of your displeasure of seeing folks whom you feel are gaming the system of entitlements or government hand outs. Personally, I too know of a couple of people who have used those gov programs to live without putting in a honest days work. It chaps my arse too. However, I have to let that angst go, press on, and teach my sons about the need to support themselves & plan for their future.

For the 2 or 3 people who 'game' the system; I believe there are 100s who really want to work and do what is necessary to support themselves and family. I also have a stinking suspicion that the deck is stacked to keep the general populace ignorant, quiet, out of touch with their leaders and too busy to notice the mayhem swirling over them. Who has time in this busy world to question the non-sense spoon-fed by media outlets?

Next point,

All I do know is, the squeaky wheel gets oiled first. Those who are protesting in the Occupy movements have the right idea. They are just demanding their government listen to them. I do not agree with some of the ideals protestors espouse but, I do believe in their rights to assemble to get their voices heard without being violently peppered sprayed or deadly force used on unarmed citizens. I have looked at my belief system and ideology; it is the soldier in me that will consistently defend those whom my inner voice says is weaker and needs support.

I am my brothers' keeper.

I am hoping all is well after the Christmas holiday season. We have been busy here and are now just getting back into our homeschool groove. So this morning, I came to check in on those who I follow during our vacation. To find a commentator who asked questions. This to me is a blessing because she allows me to further explain my rationale. Thanks Moonqueenfashions for allowing me to opportunity to reach a more diverse audience.

"Okay, so I do agree with most of your post. I have two questions. 1) Do you consider people who spend aggregiously without consideration of what they are doing not at fault for their own poverty (i.e. people who run up massive credit card debt on non-essentials, buy a house way bigger than they need in an area they really can't afford, have to have a new car, won't buy used or generic anything, etc)? 2) Were you really complaining about making almost $40k with free housing, $300 a month for food and free medical care..PLUS a second income? Those benefits, based on what I pay for a house payment, utilities and health insurance (alone I might add), would equal almost $14,000 a year. That's a low estimate as I live very frugally, have a low house payment and only pay for one person for medical care (i.e. the benefits you are actually receiving for a family in that area may total to even more than $14k). Which brings your salary to nearly $60k or over. Some career teachers don't make that and they have to have one or two college degrees depending on the state. I have two college degrees and would never make that at my current job without becoming management or working here for 15 to 20 years. So yah, consider the less fortunate indeed. My parents fed, clothed, and housed two kids and themselves on less than $25k a year and we always had a car, tv etc. It's all in how much you are willing to live smart with what you have. I'm not saying there aren't a lot of unforutnate people, particularly people who become poor through forced unemployment or long-term illness, but there are a lot more that think they deserve to live outside of their means. Just because people on the tube have fur and diamonds, drive fancy cars, etc doesn't mean we are suffering if we don't have that life. At some point people forgot about the basics of getting by and started worrying about keeping up with the Jones. by Moonqueenfashions."

1. No Ma'am, I do believe in personally responsibility especially fiscal. I do know from the experience of buying our first home at the ripe age of 39, the process is set up to confuse / bind people who are not ‘educated’ properly in personal finance, budgeting, and legal terminology to fail on their mortgages. For example; when my husband and I set out to buy this house our own lenders told us we could afford a house over 300k or calculate the mortgage payment to equal roughly 35% of our current income -- this made my head spin.

This is just not feasible because there are many factors our lenders did not figure in: we were moving, I was retiring, Hubby was not going to be employed, the lack of jobs in our immediate area we had purchased in, the upkeep of a home, the repairs needed to be done in the home, the repairs needed on the property of our home, and transportation to work when we found a job.

See, this is where lenders do not properly counsel first time buyers; a mortgage should not be anymore than 20-25% of a families' income because of factors such as I mentioned. We bought our home as a foreclosure that had been on the market empty for five years. Fortunately, I told the lenders to calculate our net income to less than third of what we were earning back in 2005 to get a more accurate picture of our financial ability to meet our obligations. Also, I knew if all came to worse my retirement check would at least cover the mortgage, insurances, car payment, credit card bill (at the time), and electricity as our basics. Plus I know how to shop, plan, and use coupons effectively for food.

2. Secondly, I was not complaining about my salary; I was merely stating numbers. What folks do not realize is at the time, our daughter had suffered a stroke on her 13th birthday and we had accumulated some debt not covered by the military health system. We had to float some debts on a credit just to get through the process of moving her from a remote hospital from Portugal to Germany and then to Washington DC. Then we also had to cover expenses not paid by the military to move our family on such short notice. We were able to emergency housing on base because of our daughter’s medical needs and hubby found a job luckily six months after we relocated.

I am forever grateful to the US Air Force and the medical personnel because without them; she would have died. We were lucky to only be 15K give or take in debt by the time she was able to get stable enough to be in physical, educational rehab, and back to semi-normal. There would have been no way she would have survived in the civilian sector with our limited income because her medical care would have cost us millions with repeated surgeries, air ambulance, rehab, and like.

3. All I am saying is; folks are desperate out there. There are people who spend unwisely or on foolish things. Those folks will always exist because they were not taught better or frankly they don’t give a shit. The world is a different place than when your parents brought your family up and the opportunities are much different for the working poor – middle class. For example, student loans will be the next bubble to hurt the US economy and I am expecting this burst to come in 2012 or 13 just like the housing dive back in 2008 to now. There is no way students will do as well as their families’ did because of accrued debt from student loans. There was a time when education was affordable or nearly free and those days are almost over. Without a degree, job experience, and lots of luck many of those students will be paying on those loans until their death. Student loans are the one area that will follow a person to the grave with accrued interest just rolling over and over.

4. I came from the back ground of a single parent struggling to make ends meet in south California and she worked two jobs. I later helped her by turning over my own paycheck when I turned 15 -- yep I started early. There were many times we had nearly bare cupboards. I am one of the fortunate ones who had a mother drill into me about not spending what you don’t have. Yet, she got into financial disarray over my sister’s medical bills by the time I left to be on my own. Because I had seen her worry; I made it a point to learn about budgeting once I joined the Air Force.

I currently do not own any diamonds or furs (it is way too hot for them here) but, I have multiple degrees which do not matter. Why do the degrees not matter? Simple, there are no jobs around here for 100 miles that pay more than $10 an hour and we have decided to use my talents to home school our sons. So, that is a win – win situation and outcome in my book.

Before You Judge, I Just Feel Like Railing

Yesterday, I read a story about a mother who applied for Food Stamps for herself and two children. She was so upset she pulled out a gun and took hostages. After awhile, she turned the gun on her children and then killed herself.

I have an idea there is much more to this story than what is being reported. What I don't understand is how many more people out there in America is facing the same humiliating doom of applying for public assistance. Personally, I have seen folks in local stores make faces and comments to those carrying the Texas SNAP card. Really???? Just who are we to judge others?

This story just makes me so incredibly sad because there by the Grace of God could walk my family so far, we have been spared. $296 a month may seem like a lot to others but, from experience with teenagers who constantly eat --- it's not near enough for growing children. I understand the SNAP card is supplemental assistance meant to augment a meager income.

Another thing that just pisses in my Cheerios, it pundits much like Mr. Gingrich wishing to abolish federal laws concerning on child labor. All I can say is: "WHAT AN ASS." How the heck are children who have enough trouble in their homes getting their nutritional needs met to concentrate on their studies; let alone be put to work as janitors, library aides, or crossing guards?

This makes the assumption that said children have no working parents at home.

I am sick to death of listening to others make harsh judgements on families they do not know. Just perhaps, if we take that mirror and look at ourselves with the same critical eye --- we may just be shocked.

-- Not everyone knows how to budget; a skill that has not been taught to the masses.
-- Not everyone has access to lawyers to explain credit applications.
-- Not many know how to plan meals and work with sales or coupons & rebates, or stockpiling when able.
-- Not everyone has access to free banking with over draft protection (those with large accts.)
-- Not everyone has low interest rate home loans.
-- Everyone does not have a reliable mode of transportation.
-- Not everyone has cadillac health insurance provided for them.
-- Not everyone has been lucky to have an education.

Let me tell you gentle reader; I am sick and tired of Republicans wanting to take away from government employees as well. I will tell you all about my own income.

When I joined the Air Force in 1986, I earned a total of $5,111 for ten months of active duty. Upon my last year, I earned a whopping total of $34,898 after 20 years of honorable service to my country. Granted, I lived on base in Maryland and got approximately $300 a month for food allowance, and had access to 24-hr medical care. We as a family was so fortunate (lucky lotto-winners) to have a second income from hubby's job.

All that went away upon my retirement with the exception of 1/2 of my active duty pay under $1,200 a month when adding our insurances for health and life. My hubby was lucky to find a job with the Army; we watch our spending throughout the year. We save a little each month to cover holiday gifts and emergencies. However, the retirement system my husband is enrolled in will not give him a retirement check --- those went away in the 1980s. We will only have Social Security and my retirement check. We are the lucky ones....................

So far, with this economy we are waiting for the other shoe to fall to wipe out our cushion. On this day as we remember those who scarificed during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Please keep in mind those who are scarificing just to make ends meet.

Woman Against Herman Cain, Or Any Republican

Okay folks, I finally figured out why Hermain Cain is not the candidate for me. Personally none of the Republican offerings this campaign have a flipping clue as to what middle America is like anymore. Today as I listened to Cain's nonsense it dawn on me while my back was turned to the telecast about GOD and other ilk he was laying out to the national media.

He sounds just like Samuel L. Jackson's character from 'SNAKES ON A PLANE.' I do not want the person who is representing me to start ranting like a maniac during a national crisis. Another thing Mr. Cain reminds me of a banty rooster in a pimp daddy hat strutting around the hen house; knowing full well he will be mostly ignored. I mostly feel sorry for Mr. Cain's wife because it feels like another Tammy Wynette moment of 'Standing By Your Man.' Mr. Cain makes for awesome reality television viewing but, not as leader of the free world. Really does anyone take this person seriously? JMHO

Next, I could not vote for Mrs. Bachman either. Anyone who does not fully support human rights and the ability for citizens to fulfill their life by marrying whom they wish; it just not my choice either. No full rights for our gay population means Mrs. Lady means you need to pray for my vote yet, that is not happening on my watch. Her flubs in other subjects just makes my head turn; how in the hell did she get elected to Congress in the first place? Again my opinion.....

Newt Gingrich, I personally could not support this man after what he did to his former wives. No Way No How! Secondly America, do you not remember he was basically tossed out as Speaker of the House for corruption; go look up his record. Third, he is sorely out of touch with suggesting 'poor kids' need to work so, they will learn how to join the working poor masses and not use welfare.

Here I also understand Mr. Gingrich has read 'The Working Poor:, chapter 4 The Dauting Workplace' by David K. Shipler. I am tired of folks who have not lived on Ramen noodles tell our country; all that is wrong with the poor is a work ethic. Really Mr. Gingrich; you need to go back to your ivory tower or live on less than 10K a year. Go ahead Mr. Gingrich, I double dog dare you to live a life in the margins without access to a viable job, health care, housing, and food. Our American schools are in shocking disarray and you suggest to have children become janitors instead of actually teaching them their required education subjects. Again......JMO

I can not vote for Mr. Romney either. Any man who changes his mind with the blowing of the media wind or audience he is addressing is not trust worthy. I could not pull the lever for any one who has rested upon his laurels without actually busting his / her tocks for anyone other than themselves.

Santorum was a Bush Lackey............nuff said.

Rick Perry has screwed up Texas and used federal handouts to balance the budget while cutting programs for the poor and public education.

After paying attention to the media circus for the last year. I am under the impression the GOP, the Koch brothers, Grover Norquist and corporations have designed this campaign mess on purpose. My way of thinking is, US political system is hi-jacked to keep Mr. Obama in office because he can get nothing done. Mr. Obama is left twisting in the wind while Republicans are running amok and killing the American economy by wiping out the middle class and sequestering the poor under more and more scrutiny.

What better way for the Republicans to get a smaller government and more control by passing more laws: to limit personal freedoms, social reforms (deep cuts), a less educated populace, making deals with banks and so on. By keeping Mr. Obama in office, Republicans and the weathly get exactly what they want. Don't let the 8.6% unemployment numbers confuse you because this is a shell game.

While the troops are drawn back stateside, government positions are cut -- just where are all those people going to be?

Folks, we really need to wake up here. Americans, the 99% are using the teachings of Gene Sharp to get their voices herd. If you have time go check out books by Mr. Sharp.

So pissed off at our societal issues, I am going to find a book in which to escape for a few days.

Thinking Outloud

While I have been on a self-imposed bed rest after a knee injury 2 1/2 weeks ago. I have been thinking about things when I could no longer tolerate reading.

Have you ever thought about how much education you have acquired or achieved since adulthood?

I would safely wager between the Air Force educating me in: how to be a solider, how to do my jobs, OJT in safety, plus all the extra professionalization courses for 20 years -- my brain was given around 500K+ in military (managerial) training.

Now this does not include all my college courses of which I have around 60 or more full 3 hr classes for a bargin rate of 150K. Now this is not counting all the materials I have used to self-teach and fill my gray mater sponge through: reading, research, and exploring the world, 1000s of books, videos, actual visits to learning institutions, volunteer work and trial / error . I would wager my brain (& yours) has had access to over 1 million USD in information, education, training, and maintenance. AMAZING THOUGHT RIGHT?

So why is it folks assume a Stay At Home Mother (SAHM) has not attained an education equal or greater than that of a college professor? I am consistently amazed at my own family assuming my life has not been fulfilled because I have not become a PAID public school teacher. Mind you, I have done and achieved all that I said I wanted to be as a child.

Teacher:
I am currently home schooling two very bright and happy sons.
Veterinarian:
I have learned how to take care of animals through our farm life.
World Travel:
20 yrs on active duty

I feel sucessful because I am happy. I may never have a fancy house yet, I have the best life can offer; my family. I know it may be hard to parlay this into my extended family's brain because some folks can not see themselves off the rut in the road they are traveling. I am so grateful to have my husband and children. I am grateful for all I was able to achieve in the Air Force. I am so blessed to know it is not the size of my paycheck that gives me peace but, the faces of my menfolk with their sleepy faces each morning -- knowing they are my gifts.

I also want to recognize my husband. Though I was told about 'lazy Mexicans' years and years ago. My heart, you are the hardest working and smartest man I know.

I Am A Reader So...

After reading some articles I wanted to pass on to all of my readers. I am really incensed after watching the Republican debates. Yes, I do watch them because I want to know who is being set up at the sacrificial lamb (figure head) to led the free world.

Mind you, I am not happy with President Obama nor did I vote for him in 2008. I feel he just gives too many concessions to our GOP leaders. In this I believe he was being a patsy up until; he started signing Executive Orders to right some of America's economic ills. Thank you Mr. Obama for finally finding your voice and standing up to the 'NO MORE TAX INCREASES,' edict issued by Grover Norquist and signed many 'elected Republican officials.'

And before you all consider voting for a Republican or say Libertarian just go look in many sources until you are comfortable with your candidates voting stance -- that is all I am saying.

By the way Mr. Cain, we do not purchase any oil from IRAN for the record. LOL I almost passed out over that gaffe. Also, if our candidates applaude or sanction water boarding or other torture techniques then, they are saying they are okay with the torture of our military or civilian abductees. Just saying be careful of whom you are voting for because when one finger points three are pointing back in return.

On Veteran's Day: I Can't Explain Why

On this day of thanking our nation's veterans; I am hard pressed to explain to my sons and husband why I cry when watching or hearing:

the National Anthem, TAPS, Saluting the Flag or President, taking an oath of office, listening to prayers for peace, attending a funeral, visiting a memorial for the fallen, the Passing of the Colors, or witnessing those gathered in ceremonies to recognize veterans or our fallen.

I well up for all those families, co-workers, and friends who have waited for months or years for their loved ones to come home. I just bawl for those who will never again slip their loved ones into their embrace.

As a veteran, I love my country with all her blessings and flaws and though I never stepped foot onto a battle field; I weep from feeling guilty of not being chosen to stand by those who did. It's not that I feel cheated but, I feel like I cheated because of not being there with my 'band of brothers.'

It is so hard to explain to my sons how being in the military; I served in only support roles. Or convey the unity of standing in a flight, with the smell of starch so strong; it caused hunger pangs in the wee mornings during reveille's beaconing call to duty. Somethings I can only tell them about from a point of view that is still burns in my soul at the sound of a band's first solemn note -- taking me back to my youth and honor as a airman.

Another point, I can not tell them what it is to be a man in uniform so there are times I just can not speak since, I am a woman. I can only allow them to see my tears on days such as this. On this day, I pray for peace and say thanks to all who have served to include friends and family of those who did.

Cain's Creepy Oompa Loompa Vibe

Did any of ya'll watch the horror show of a press conference yesterday? First he allowed his slander lawyer talk for five minutes about the 'women' who were coming forward with claims of Herman Cain's sexual harassment.

For me, if a President (to be, or wanna be) brings out a lawyer this in itself says he is not ready to be the leader of the free world. From my own experience of working in the testosterone laden military machine; my Liar Liar Pants on Fire pinger went off when Mr. Cain kept referring to himself in the third person.

Also, Mr Cain the symantecs of your speech slammed me back into the days of Bill Clinton's "I Did Not Have Sexual Relations With That Woman."

Now another thing that bothers the heck out of me and thanks to my husband for putting a finger on it. Mr. Cain reminds me of a geriatic Dave Chappelle from this skit (click the word) on Comedy Central. Here I insert shudders because to believe he still has a following and support of the American voters makes me feel nauseous; have we really gotten so morally corrupt this strutting rooster will be allowed to still have a campaign?

One word --- "Deplorable."

Occupy Wall Street: My Thoughts

Okay probably the folks who read my posts know how I feel about the bias of the BIG FIVE media: Fox News, HLN, CNN, MSNBC, and ABC. Depending on which pundit you happened to be watching for a glimmer of real news determines the slant of the owner of the corporation.

What churns my butter and keeps me up at night is this:

We the psuedo middle class, working poor, and indigent have been set up to believe that one day if we bust our proverbial balls; we can become rich through education, 60 hr work weeks, and devotion to our corporate leaders. This is just not true.

While it is true -- a few folks find a path by Natural Selection in the modern age to become sucessful. For the majority; our career paths are basic a system of lottery or chance. It all boils down to luck, determination, good health, knowing the right persons, working for the decent boss, and prudent planning. We as a whole are told to trust the markets and invest so; we can become wealthy upon retirement -- have you watched the markets? This is just another way to bleed off hard earned wages from folks who are scrapping by --- take your monies and pay off your mortgages instead. Wall Street will not be there if the banks foreclose to find you another home.

Now the banks are another issue. Did you know the Federal Reserve is not a government entity? Nope, they are a firm of privately owned banks; who basically own America and many other countries. These bankers decide the rate at which we can apply for credit and loans -- the pay back. The Fed Reserve buys up banks; we owe the Federal Reserve our livelihood, our homes, cars, education, and a chance to play in the lottery of financial security. There is no such thing anymore......

I support those folks who are voicing their angst through protesting and picketing. While I could actually bitch slap both the reporter and twenty something female who said she would not take a job if a banker offered her one. This type of reporting gives a horrible insight into what is actually happening. People can not survive on the minimum wage (or 2+ jobs), part time jobs, pay student loans, mandated health care insurance, multiple taxes coming our way through the Cap & Trade, find a home, or buy groceries. My family is at risk; part of the 99% club who are just one job loss away from losing what we have worked for since we were 16. My husband and I have been raised to work since birth, and contribute to society, pay taxes, provide an education to our children, do charitable works, save for a rainy day, and live within our means.

The sad thing is......this new American economy is built on a house of cards laid out by bankers. Our financial system is made to glean as much from the working 99% with the promise of the LOTTERY of possible wealth. Funny thing is, the lottery is a diversion and basic method of placating the masses by lulling us to believe a win will make us just like Warren Buffet (or nearly).

This too is a myth just like the myth of the American middle class.

I Remember The First PC I Used

I was a senior in high school; all I wanted for Christmas was a type writer to pound out my stories / poems / experiences, to graduate with honors and go on to college. It is so strange now at 45 and the death of Steve Jobs; I feel more affected / effected than when Elvis died as a child. To self-described GEEKS; I am an original computer junkie. Instead of going into college of which I had no money to do so --- I chose the Air Force; and the intel field chose me with all its tech gear. I actually remember the talking Mac, scrolling screen, cursive writing, and carrying handle. Times have changed eh?

I can think of no industry that has not been made better from the advent of computers, iPads, iPhones, etc, ushering in a true Jestsonian age. Commuting on the internet is the great equalizer of modern society. It matters not if you have degree; one can and may learn anything even social skills. A library of books are possible within nano seconds upon a device that weighs less than a single paper volume. Catalogs of music, applications, email, portable devices, medical records, personal records; the new technology is one that has instantly available information --- the newer informational revolution replaced the industurial.

While I keep Steve Jobs's wife, four children, family, and friends in my prayers for peace.

I just feel saddened to lose such a wonderful innovator.

May all find solace as these words are brought to you over one of the visions of a great leader.

Some Things I Wanted to Pass On

Do ya'll love history? I know I do and apparently have pass this love onto my oldest son. The Travel Channel has a show I just absolutely adore that comes on Tuesday nights called 'OFF LIMITS.' The host Don Wildman takes viewers into abandoned: buildings, weapons sites, rivers, manufacturing plants, government sites, and tells viewers about the historical contributions made to Americans from passed generations. Last night, he took us to New York's Governors' Island, a ship grave yard, the biggest arm's dealer in the US, a military prison, and the island used to quarantine 1000s of people with small pox all in or near New York City. In my opinion so worth the viewing.

Another thing I wanted to tell my readers about is a website called icivics. I found this website looking for information to teach our boys about civics, economics, and budeting for personal use and discussions on the national level. This is an excellent site for home school parents or those just needing to find information layed out in a manner that is easy to understand. This week Saenz, Zephyr and I are going over our lessons in budeting and yes; I teach them about coupons and rebates -- very important in my way of thinking. There are both teacher and student pages to print out or download for later use. Excellent site, I hope ya'll enjoy.

We still have not gotten another pup. It is so lonely outside without Banjo. Seriously, I think I have been depressed since he was killed. We do have the word out to find another pet for our family. Have ya'll noticed that fall is here? It is such a blessing not to be over 110 by noon. The boys and I will be spending more time outside now that the Fire Ball has taken a break from our daily torture. I hope all is going well in your slices of heaven...

Have You Ever Read The Preamble?

Let me refresh your memory.

"We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessing of liberty to ourselves and our prosterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States."

This was an introductory phrase written to outline the Constitution's guiding principles. Just think of the Preamble as a 'The DUMMIES GUIDE: To The U.S. Constitution.' Does the average American take these words to heart? My wager is to that question is, 'No.' If one was to take the preamble and breaks it down into parts just what does it mean? Well for me the following are my core principals as a human being, citizen, defender of freedom, and most importantly as a parent.

"WE THE PEOPLE of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union," We are to come together as a nation. To work together as one, to reach across the aisle and compromise for the common good of man. Has anyone seen this lately?

"Establish Justice," We have built a system of local, state, and federal laws. However, Lady Justice has been hog-tied. Justice has become unbalanced to give those with monetary means the ability to by pass common sense and decency through loop holes. We need to put her blinders back on and take lawyers' fingers off the scales. (Sorry waxing poetic there.)

"Insure domestic tranquility," We could not have 50 unique states trading and using 50 monetary systems -- trade is crucial to a 'union.' We had to come together to have a single focus for roads, laws, immigration standards, language, and lay the framework to keep peace. It also means we (individual states) have equal representation in Congress based not only upon state population -- the House of Representatives but; representation not based upon size -- the Senate. This also includes the role of the Supreme Court to insure no laws are unjust under the Constitution.

"Provide for the common Defense," this is our five branches of military, national guard, para-military, and public education (police, fire, and to me education because an educated UNION is more apt to be secure.) We had to have a 'common defense' to secure our national borders. We have to have a 'common defense' to fight diease. We have to have a 'common defense' to assist citizens during natural or man-made disasters. We have to have a 'common defense' because we are humans who need the security of knowing we (the U.S.) will be here (collectively) tomorrow.

"Promote general welfare," Now many folks have issue with the term welfare but, the actual term was originally used as such.

World English Dictionary welfare (ˈwɛlˌfɛə) — n, 1. health, happiness, prosperity, and well-being in general http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/welfare

Only later did this word come to mean government assistance. The general welfare in my opinion can be simply summed up as: "I am my brother's keeper." I have the responsibility as a citizen to assist those who need a hand up. I have no issue helping those out of work keep their homes, feed their family, educate their children, and have access to medical care through paying taxes or contributing to charity. Because until the last head in our country has a safe place to lay his/her head; we have failed to protect ourselves.

The final part is: "and secure the blessing of liberty to ourselves and our prosterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States." This is me simply outlines national goals of being a union; free to speak, become educated, seek medical assistance, congregate, build homes, set aside for our future & our childrens' future, find redress of concerns, worship, live, work, dream, hope, move about the country; etc. Our Constitution is what we make it.

Without folks actually learning what is in the document; we can never be truly free.

The Strange History of Don't Ask, Don't Tell (DADT)

This weekend Directv has a free promo weekend allowing us to view HBO programming. I stumbled on a documentary called 'The Strange History of: Don't Ask, Don't Tell." This is a great documentary for outlining the historical policies / discussions behind the decision to allow 'gays' to serve in the military.

(Shakes head here --- because they have been and will always be a part of humanity and not just seeking admittance to a single group.)

Now you are probably wondering why I am writing about this topic? Right.....

Simple, I served from March 1986 until April 2006 in the United States Air Force. My first job was in the intelligence field. We had to attain, maintain, and retain a top secret clearance to just be able to work. No problem right for most service members however, there is a caveat for serving honestly (honor code) and keeping no secrets -- to inform on other service members of their unlawful behavior to include what was then thought to be sexual misconduct.

My first room mate was a lesbian and when I moved into our then room; she informed me at great peril to her career. Personally, I did not care about her personal behavior and did not see homosexuality as a problem.  One reason for my acceptance of her and to not inform my superiors was simple. I knew of a couple of family members who were also lesbians (though closeted) and knew homosexuality did not keep them from living honorable lives. They had families, jobs, hopes and dreams. I decided to love my friend more than myself and honor her disclosure even though I could have lost my career by staying silent.

Later in 1993, when DADT was passed I never understood the big deal because American soliders for the most part had already been living with that standard. What chapped my arse was the DISHONESTY of DADT; the military was advising its members to stay silent. To me the double standard was humiliating and dishonorable because to lie by omission is still a lie. Why did I not 'TELL' was quiet a simple rationalization in my thinking process and I used a 4 Star's quote to cement my silence in uniform.

I still choose to support the gay community to have the same laws to include marriage recognition as a man/woman has the right.  When 'we the government' deny one group its inalienable rights to pursue their lives in the manner of their choosing then; the next step of the community is to limit others.

The marriage arugment is a kicker because it was once a form of property laws awarded to a man. Marriage bound a woman to a man and all she brought with her into the marriage became the property of her husband.  And if one was to research even further to say 'rape,' this was also a property law because women either were the property of their fathers or husbands. Meaning if a woman was raped it was a crime committed against her father or her husband.  (sobering thought eh?)

Nowadays, marriage definitions have changed THANK GOODNESS. This is just my humble opinion; if a person wants to marry is it not my business to say if they are awarded that right as long as both parties are adults. If a person is gay; it is not my business what life choices they make as long as he / she is an adult.

ENOUGH SAID ALREADY!

Keep government out of our bedrooms, homes, and careers!

So What Will Be the Next Bubble?

Our economy has seen the credit (banking) market basically dry up and the housing market is barely limping along. Lately, I have been wondering what will be the next market to take a direct hit and in my opinion there are three for profit markets that are next to be hit: Education, Food, and Fuel.

In our family, we have felt the affects of going to college (trade school) and upon graduation with honors two of two have not been able to find jobs in their given fields for over 1 year.  In the mean time, both had to pay for their education by taking a job outside their ideal career path. Given, eventually both found work to support their families.

Yet, what each did not foresee was the need to keep educating themselves because in this day and age;

it is not only what you know today but, what you need to know tomorrow along with -- who you know right now to get a job.

Today's college graduates are not really looking at the market to see which areas are really growing or need fresh graduates. Nope, instead for profits schools are pimping pipe-dreams (gathering profits) say in Journalism, Business Administration, basket weaving instead of; equipping students with real knowledge about expanding markets for those with heavy backgrounds in: economics, financial, and engineering.

Secondly, as America's manufacturing jobs moved overseas because of the high cost of US wage earners. Big Corps did not foresee foreign markets not only killing the American work force but, concurrently losing their employees' innovation to improve their processes and technology. Meaning, Big Corps shot themselves in the foot now that wages are rising 20 to 40% per year for a foreign work force. Big Corps did not count on the volatility of the foreign market place. (I guess they did not pay attention to what happened to American economy growth in the 50 and 60s?)

So Big Corps are left with moving back to the US to keep themselves flush and their hold on innovation because the wages in America hold pretty darn steady. The sad but true fact is Americans earn less now than say in the 90s. Here is the final straw, as Big Corps move back manufacturing on American soil; will they find a work force that will be willing to kow tow and build widget even though the worker has a degree in say: Journalism, Business Admin, or basket weaving? Just think of how much training those workers will need; who no longer have a background in assembly line work. It will be a sharp learning curve for both Big Corps and the American work force.

Food prices are going to continue to soar as the effects of Mother Nature come into play with floods, droughts, fires, and other over the top events. So what should we do? We have agumented with small garden beds and stock piling non-perisishables (only when on sale and with coupon) to build up our larder. I am so against Monsanto and its GMO grains which requires the pesticide Round Up to grow. Any time for pro-fit starts messing with DNA and Bio-Diversity to wage war on small farmers; those who will be buying the end product so take heed. Because not only are products on the market today; the consumer may be eating food that is not truly a food as nature intended. Just saying.........

Fuel, If you have been following the news around the world then you should be noticing a pattern. This is one of the last areas the "Haves" (big oil companies) are digging in deep. Yes there is a lot of growth in Texas right now for building pipelines and fracking for natural gas, oil, and coal seam gas. What surprises me is folks who have gotten paid by these companies have no compunction for their neighbors or even their property's future --- folks are just so desparate to get paid they are basically signing away their birth rights.  What chaps my hide is: we have only 5 acres so if neurotic neighbor man next door decides to lease to an Oil Company near our property line? Well he can and there is nothing we can do about ground water contamination, chemical accumulation, or the noise.

So get this America ---

not only do you work for THE MAN for lower wages, you buy His Cars on loan, use and over spend on His credit cards & bank loans, eat His genectically engineered grain, accquire mercer or give birth in for-profit hospitals, burn His fuel to get to work/live but, you also live in the houses He owns. Now given my cynicism -- just push my horrible outlook over to the side; what are we going to do as the serfs around this horrible kingdom of Oz?

PS. I am also sick of the American Media. LOL go figure.

So I Took A Break

I don't know about ya'll sometimes life just gets in the way of things like posting blogs. I needed a break and took one. This has not stopped me from however, watching world events and shaking my head.

Watching the news on Hurricanes Irene and Lee; I have decided people will always be vulnerable since, they do not believe in the power of science to forecast such events accurately. I saw on group of men partying in WV on the day the bands from IRENE were going though; one of them MOONED the cameraman of the Weather Channel.

Is it shocking; yes because common sense has been replaced by out right stupidity. Please Weather Channel, stop giving a Category before said storm makes landfall. I believe people are so arrogant to believe a Cat 1 is not so bad. Sadly those in the North East now know much better.

Next, the economy is still a mess and think it will be for a LONG time after watching the Republican and TEA party debates. Why does the GOP believe they know what is good for Americans who; 1 in 6 live in poverty? Our leaders are so far removed from the reality of daily life they believe tax breaks for corporations will bring forth more jobs. To me this is just silly. I have a hard time believing Mr. Obama caved but, he did to bring forth Obamacare. I don't know what the answer is yet, feel spending billions overseas is not putting food on the table for those who barely squeak by or living in homes about to be foreclosed.

I have also taken to watching more of my news on Link and Currentv because I am basically tired of the commericalization of the American press. Not counting all the control big corporations have over what Americans are being spoonfed by MSNBC, NBC, ABC, FOX and Headline news. So, I have discussions with Saenz all the time about questioning what he sees on television and to think out side the proverbial media box.

The month since Banjo was killed has been rough one on me. I have not gone outside much because him not being there just breaks my heart. I constantly look for him outside and miss him biting my fingers or trying to snatch the mail from my hands. Soon, we will be given two pups from his mother. Banjo was such a wonderful pet; I hope the new arrivals get here; yesterday.

The week of 9/11; I spent on reflection thinking about my country and the loss of all those souls. Such pain and sorrow, one day I hope we can afford to make the trip back to New York to pay our respects as we did in 2005.

Farm news, we have been drawing down on the amount of animals we house here. Because frankly, the cost of keeping them is just not sustainable and the drought makes it impossible to grow any support feed. We can not water as much as a garden or grain will require to produce. The temperatures have been over 100 (40c) since mid-March with only 4 slightly rainy days leaving us with a water fall deficit over 16 inches for the year.

I am happy to be home schooling our boys. Saenz and Zephyr love being at home and we cover almost every subject under the sun but, have a daily emphasis on math, science, social studies, reading, and whatever their hearts' desire to learn. What is the best; knowing their school day is not 12 hours or more with a bus ride to include homework.

Tomorrow makes the day; I made one of the best decisions of my life by marrying. Fifteen years ago, we tied the knot at the court house in Poth, Texas. So happy anniversary to the hardest working man I know.

Hurricane Irene Impending

For those on the East coast; we have been watching to see if she is coming near. Just remember Hurricane Katrina came ashore as a Cat 2 in 2005; 1800 souls were lost that omnious day and during the recovery so, please evacuate if your area is under mandatory notices. If the military is moving aircraft and ships please note: it's a good idea for you to take leave too. Also, more folks die as the result of the storm surge than those of strong winds. We are keeping ya'll in our prayers for safety.

We are also keeping watch on the next possible storm which will be named after a male; I think it will be Jose or Juan. Did you know storm names are only retired if there has been a major impact but, may be brought back? Here is a list of retired Atlantic storm names, year landed, and area affected.

This passed week; I have gone on a reading tear along with scooping up a documentary I plan to use when our boys get to the history of America's founding.

Slavery & The Making of America

This series has four, one hour videos that taught me a few things I had never known about the start of slavery in the United States with the arrival of eleven men from different countries in the founding of the British colonies. What I found extremely interesting was how those 11 eventually went on to become somewhat freed men as they bartered with the people that basically owned them.

Another area I found interesting is our founding father Thomas Jefferson's stance of not allowing slaves to remain in the US. This just blows my mind plus his relationship with the man (Jupiter) he own. I just don't understand the hypocrisy of the whole notion of America advocating for 'equality' yet, using the lives of others to lift self up.

This series is remarkable in the fact it showed how the Republican party was basically born and fought staunchly against bringing slaves into the political fold. In the reconstruction era; this series explains the enactment of the 14th and 15th Admendments to include the tactics used by Republican party far back into the 1800s over the threat of losing their power and financial livelihood. Seriously this is a great series and I will be watching it with my boys later on in the school year.

I purchased some books last week so; I could use them to teach the boys about the horrible conditions in which some children grow up and are abused by parents or their society. It is a hard fact of life not every child is brought forth in love, respect, or understanding. Onto to home school news; we are slowly easing back into our daily lessons with primarily a focus on reading, spelling, math, and penmanship for Zephyr. Saenz on the other hand is starting with "The Story of Us" and pre-Algebra with a smattering of science, literature, grammar, spelling, to include practice writting essays.

I am hoping all who pass here are enjoying their summer; personally I am praying for rain or even a tropical storm to come our way. With temps hitting over 112 every afternoon; we need some relief from the blazing Fire Ball.

Since we are a family that depends on a military retirement check (mine, 20 yr AF, SAHM homeschooling mother) and husband's a current government employee (who may be terminated) to live and pay our bills. Personally sick of both parties and not one person to include President Obama who will share in the blame though this fiscal mess has been happening for over 30 years. The sad thing is;

I know no one in my community that is any better off by electing our government officials in 2008 and 2010.

Not one of our leaders has inspired HOPE or CHANGE other than the need to go without and the constant threat of economic ruin.

Washington leaders do not care about the people they represent anymore because frankly they don't have to -- since folks continue to vote them into office.

I have a hard time believing in a system that gerry-manders to keep seats, ear-marks funding for their districts, accepts special interest funding, wants to get rid of labor unions, says 'we will read the bill after it's law and then gets an exemption (Obama-care) for their state,' and threatens to not pay for "ENTITLEMENTS" that have been rightly earned by serving our country, paying into medicare and social security for decades.

Somethings I would like to see though:

Popular vote of US citizens on Congressional Pay, Benefits, Vacation Time, and Health Care tied to their job performance based annually. I don't believe they should automatically earn those hefty salaries.

Recall rights for all Senators and Representatives.

A balanced budget agreement.

No funding for re-election by special interest groups or corporations.

Term limits on: congressional leaders, welfare and other social programs, drug testing for all of the above.

Jail time for congressional leaders who do not honor their oath of office much like the UCMJ.

Then again I am just a middle-aged mother who has two sons to raise and educate in this lopsided country. I am fearful for their future and the future of our three older children who are struggling to make ends meet. I am worried for my husband's career and lack of job availability if he gets laid off from a government workforce he has faithfully served the US for 22 years.

I see so much disparity in this country and want to know just what the working poor is supposed to do to survive? I don't even have to leave my house just look across our property line to our neighbors plight and struggle. No one is safe from the bread line and lack of basic human needs are no longer attainable for many.

Do Ya'll Talk To Your Children

About politics, politicians, economy, and national issues affecting your family? With the start of the new school year upon us; I have been explaining the three branches of the national government to our boys. It is a very hard thing to explain to a child why Mommie and Daddy are really paying attention to the new hot topic about the economy, national budget, and unprofessional antics of our elected leaders.

I firmly remember growing up in Southern California during the national gas crisis. I remember when K-Mart, Wal-mart, and Target was a dirty word and only those preceived to be poor had to shop there. I rightly remember grocery shopping with my single-parent mom; who could not fill her cart with anything other than: rice, beans, sugar, flour, pasta, Koolaide, white bread, hamburger meat, bologna, and no fresh produce other than bananas.

I firmly believe as a parent the reason we as a country have gotten into the economic mess we are facing now is our leaders are still using a credit card to pay another bill. Our economy while complex is quite simple; the United States has a spending problem.

So this week, I have been having firm discussions with our boys about the necessity of living well within our means. However, it will be a tough go for us because we really do not spend on frivalous things like: prepared foods, eating out, entertainment, vacations, clothing, games, or other luxury items. We also depend on our government to honor my military retirement and healthcare. My husband is a government employee facing the possibility of being cut from his job. The rest of this year we as a family will be looking for more ways to stretch our already limited budget.

I am going to have a hard time though explaining why Mr. Obama just held a birthday dinner in which the plates cost 35.8K when our family's meal was rice, carne guisada, and beans for less than $3 for the entire meal..... Just saying

Eugene & Emily: A Match Made for Texas Heaven

If wishes came true; Tropical Storms Eugene and Emily would park their amorous hineys atop the Texas drought stricken areas for about 72 hours and make serious thunderstorm babies.

However, I know this is just a dream. By 10 a.m. we are forced inside to ride out the day. Though we do check on our critters to ensure they are not baked by the heat wave. Seriously, just walking to the mail box can cause heat stroke. Our new normal temp by 5 p.m. is or on 114; seriously dangerous heat.

I know this is a little late but, Zephyr is now an official Snaggle Toothed-Cubby Bear. Just marking milestones and incredible rites of passage here on the farm.

Don't forget tonight begins the new season of 'Billy the Exterminator.' Billy started out with Mike Rowe on a Dirty Jobs episode and eventually A&E gave them their own show. The boys and I love this show because we learn about animals / critters most folks consider pests. Really, those critters are pests inside homes thus the need for exterminators. The shows that make our skin crawl the worst are cock roach (insect) infestations. YIKES!

So what are ya'll doing to beat the heat? I hate cooking in this weather so; we are having lots of tortilla roll-ups (wraps) and other kinds of no cooking fare.

So what have ya'll been up to? Same ole, same ole around here just living life in the routine we cut for ourselves. Seriously, I believe we need a vacation. However, at this time of uncertainity we just can not afford such a luxury. I have been doing piddling things to keep my mind occupied like: spending time with our boys, taking care of the house and critters, reading as much as I can get away with, and watching the news. Here are some casual observations:

Netflix price change; really there are folks upset over this? Amazes me because I find the company to offer an amazing deal. For giggles I kept track of the movies in and out for a month and have found we average around 20 movies (documentaries, cartoons, shows) a month. At or under $1 each, Netflix is a bargin that can not be beat at all. Their streaming service does not work for us because we do not have DSL service out here but, have to rely on satellite and the buffering drives me insane. Folks come to terms; Netflix is pretty darn awesome in my opinion; if you don't like the changes just move onto another service.

And I do know about Redbox, but their service is cost prohibitive if you add a 30 mile roundtrip to check out a $1 a nite rental after adding gas, wear and tear, and my time. I think Netflix is actually losing money with us because of shipping and our volume of rentals. Sssssssh don't tell. LOL

The drought has killed everything around here. I am surprised ranchers can afford to keep any cattle at all. There is no hay to speak of; and to have to buy grain to feed them; my wager watch beef prices continue to rise. I am thinking we will have to wait until mid September to plant a second garden. Really we are just one big ole fuse awaiting some careless person to toss a cigarette and the whole state will go up in flames.

'Big Rich, Texas' on Style Network. Lets talk about taking out the garbage here. Sad sad reality show with all the earmarks of Jersey Shore but, without the class. (LMFBOH) I was up one night and could not sleep only to happen upon this mess. As someone who has spent most of their adult life in Texas; I am ashamed for the producers to be portraying such ilk to the American public that in no way resembles a real person in the State. Really, does the public believe the 'RICH' would have the compunction to be a part of such nonsense? Hopefully this will just go the way of other ill fated reality shows......on the cutting room floor.

Playing Chicken....No I Don't Mean The Useful Kind

I am personally sick of our elected leaders playing chicken. I wrote the following and put it into draft around 2 months ago:

"Balance our national budget? Seems like our Legislative and Executive Branch are just postering over who's ideals will get met in order, to raise the debt ceiling.

I am wondering what would the everyday American would do?

Mind you 'certain' promises have been made like Social Security, Medicare, Medi-aid, Military Retirements, Veterans Affairs and a plethora of other programs so, those will have to be dealt with first. Mind you working class Americans have paid into social security for decades only to be threatened with it becoming unfunded. Social Security funds has been used for other programs by Presidents nearly since inception for programs like war or military interventions etc.

I am more than willing to give more for our health insurance and forego Cost Of Living Allowances (COLA) for my monthly retirement checks because we need to raise monies to refill our national coffers. However, our play-acting legislators will keep our mothers and fathers from possibly getting paid their 'fixed income retirement' by not taking care of business. Since, the House seen a gain tilted to the Republican side; the American budget has been in peril because not one budget has been passed on time.

Think about that; what would happen to your household if you chose to ignore meeting your financial obligations for over 2 years?

What the common American may not be aware of;

If America defaults this could set the scene for the world not using the DOLLAR as the world currency. Does that cause anyone passing here concern? It should because once a new World Currency replaces the US dollar; America will find many things will raise in cost like: fuel, food, electricity, interest rate increases and so on. For example: have you ever wondered why the cost of a barrel oil is reported in dollars? Because all countries but, the United States have to first convert their currency into dollars before purchasing oil for themselves.

However, if our government cancels or defaults this will effect nearly all aspects of the US marketplace because the US dollar will lose even more of it's value.

What stokes my internal fires is knowing all this posturing is for naught; meaning the debt ceiling will have to be raised. As it stands, China owns approximately 10% of our national debt. Can you imagine what would happen if we do not repay what we owe? Like Greece, will we have to lease out our national treasures or simply list them on eBay?

Since, Mr. Obama has taken office the debt has risen from 10.6 to 14.5 trillion dollars; I firmly believe this has not all be due to enacting the Healthcare but, finally proper accounting for wars on three fronts are being actually accounted for in the public arena. That should not surprise anyone because we as a country are embedded either on actual foreign soil or using technology to 'attack' other nations under guise of protecting us from terrorism -- think drone attacks here.

What chaps my hide is; America used to be the most stable economy in the world. We were the free-thinkers, innovators, scholars, and favored the pursuit of life, liberty, and freedom. Now, sadly I am believing we are becoming sheeple too busy with our heads down to not hold some fire to the azzez of those we appointed to lead. Your thoughts????, (written May 12th saved into drafts.)

All I know is; if I had not have completed my duty. I could have been brought up on charges of dereliction, been demoted, charged a fine, separated and/or sent to military jail. Where is the justice for the American Public?

Update on family issues:

Hubby has been home since Tuesday with pnuemonia -- I hate it when my menfolk are ill. I need to have corrective surgery on my lasik'ed eyes since, I can not see properly for typing, blogging, teaching, and just plain reading has been a chore. I personally called for a break in our school days so; I would not have to do much reading. Just don't tell my boys they think they are on summer vacation.

Banjo went back to the vet and will have to keep his stitches, drains, and cone of shame for another week. Poor little guy; just don't feel sorry for him. He spends his days with me and has taken up the habit of trying even to go to the restroom with me. I am so not liking that neediness at all.

On The Mend, So Many Blessings

Friday, Vet Jerica called to tell us we could pick up Banjo. He is on the mend but, very sore. Here he is looking at me just begging a bit to be picked up and babied. Of course, I have no problem with his request.

You can see the puncture wounds/bit marks on his back and shoulder where the Rott snapped on to him. Sixty stitches, 4 drain tubes, lots of bruising, 5 types of medication -- he has been my shadow since he got home.

Banjo spent two days riding the couch learning how to be a recuperating couch potato. Both boys and I swear he was watching the Nat Geo programming on 'Deadliest Predators;' probably wondering if he would see the female rott that took offense to his presence. Banjo has slept next to me since his return from the vet pushing right up next to me for security. I just feel so bad for the little guy. He is such a wonderful member of our family; we would be lost without him. By Sunday, he was starting to play with Saenz and Zephyr a bit following them around and slapping at him with his front paws.

This morning before it got too hot; Banjo and I sat outside in the shade. He so wanted to go with me to let out the chickens and feed the goats but, I left him in the yard. I just can not take the chance of one of them pecking his back wounds. What I find amazing is; he still loves the feel of the morning sun on his face and just sat on a knoll in our yard sun-bathing. He hold no grudges and is still just a loving baby.

Hopefully tomorrow or Wednesday he can get those drains removed. I can tell you one thing; Banjo hates the smell and taste of those 'nasty' antiboditics given to him. LOL It is a struggle for me to get him to take his meds just like our boys.

School is out for us until he mends.

Say A Little Prayer; We Owe Banjo So Much

This morning, I was awakened to the yelps and cries of Banjo. So I rushed to the window only to see him racing across the backyard. I could see a pink stain on his shoulder from the upstairs window. I went to check on him only to find him kinda dazed, the wound was fresh and barely bleeding.

I ran back up stairs because I knew I had to get both boys up and rush him to the vet's office. Saenz popped up right away as did Zephyr. Saenz got Banjo's kennel while I dressed and brought down a towel. I managed to get Banjo inside the kennel without being bitten; mind you I would not have minded because I know he was in a lot of pain. This looks like he ripped his back open on some wire. We will search the yard later when hubby is home.

Right now Banjo is being taken care of at the South Texas Animal Hospital by Jerica. I was just a almost 'weepy' mess as I watched her exam him after administering some pain meds. His yelps of pain just about ripped my heart out just like when I had to take one of my own babies to the ER to be seen. He looks just awful. He is in surgery now and though it looks like a superficial wound; I am worried to pieces. He is such a wonder pet with a warrior's heart. We owe this little 7 lbs of love so much for saving us from two rattlers and other danger lurking on our property. If ya'll don't mind please say a little prayer because we need our pet back healthy and happy.

On to another major event (rite of passage), Zephyr lost his first tooth with another one to soon join last night. I am so proud of him; he did not get upset over the blood and came to tell us the news. He is such a big boy with no panic in his heart over such a milestone.

Zephyr found a hand-written under his pillow a 'Thank You' note from Tooth Fairy Jennifer on the outside of an envelop with this surprised tucked inside.

You Might Want To Turn Away

Last night, around 11 p.m.; Banjo was on the back porch losing his mind. So, I being the scaredy cat -- I am turned on all the outdoors lights to see what was upsetting him. I saw nothing but, him having a conniption running back and forth to the back porch.

(Hubby was in bed already and I am too scared to go outside at night remember the rattlesnake?)

Then not seeing anything, I went downstairs to the back door and sure enough; this monster. He was drinking right out of Banjo's bowl and would hiss at him. I banged on the door and the raccoon just simply ran off. However, Banjo nor I was fooled; the little monster just stayed out of sight and then came back a few seconds later. Banjo commenced barking again and I took off upstairs to get hubby.

Mind you this raccoon was over twice Banjo's size and could have killed him. Hubby and Saenz went downstairs with the shotgun; Saenz opened the door for Dad and.....

BAM!!!

They tracked it down in the yard and put it out of it's misery because Hubby shot him on the hind haunch. Then they put him in the water trough so Banjo could not get to the wound. Sickening yes but, totally necessary because raccoons can carry transmissable dieases. Though this is an adult raccoon; he/she is not the really large one that comes around to mess with our chickens or feed cans; I am guessing that one weighs nearly 30 lbs because it's tracks are over an inch wide.

On to that good night, everyone went back to bed.

The reason we are having such a time with wild critters is Texas is in the middle of a horrible drought. When a person can only remember three rain falls since Febuary; then there is a natural disaster in the making. This picture above is right inside our yard; mind you we water through the week at night to almost no avail. The ground is so dry; we fear fire from some careless motorist parking on the side of the road or tossing a cigarette. We have green grass somewhat and keep watering so our foundation under and near our home doesn't shift to cause us more problems.

This is right outside our home's fence line but, still on our property. Nothing but crackling grass tufts, dirt, and creased rivets of hope in the Earth.

I am thinking the 2009 was bad yet, 2011 is shaping up to be even worse. What do ya'll think?

Casualty of Drought

Ladies and Gentlemen this was around 10 a.m. this morning.

I heard Banjo barking his alarm. So for the next 20 minutes I kept watch in the yard; same familiar place near the a/c unit. Then Banjo would not stop barking and was now near a large mesquite. I noticed all the scrub jays and other wild birds having a right old-fashioned conniption. I went to get my binoculars and kept watching because Banjo was just incensed; I now know his snake bark.

And through my binoculars on the second story; I found the familiar spade shaped head poking up from a divet in our ground and it was making its way to the middle of our front yard. Mind you, it was only 3 feet long but, fat and healthy with 7 rattles; bent on hunting right off our front porch. So I kept watched until it curled up under another tree right next to tomato garden.

During this time; all the birds would take turns landing just outside of the snakes' range and making as much noise as possible. I called my hubby and told him in no way shape or form was I going outside. I could have tried to shoot from the upstairs window but, I would not been accurate. After hanging up with hubby and telling him about the 7 rattle monster in the yard; I lost it in the grass.

Hubby came home as usual, ate dinner, took a nap. and just on whim picked up his weapon of choice to see what he could find.

While I am a not a big fan of killing snakes. This bugger did not even rattle when my husband walked up on it. So I am guessing it was healthy with a fresh kill or extremely thirsty because it had been in our yard for 10 hours which just blows my mind. Its head is resting in a safe place so no other animals can get to it and I hung its body on the fence for another critter's free meal away from our yard.

I really think this year with the extreme drought we are having this will not be the last venomous snake we see. As this is the fourth one in less than a month we have found in the same area.

I am also going to do a suggestion another friend made about making a small pond just away from our yard. Then snakes will be happy to hunt and our yard will return to being a safer haven; maybe I can rest in peace somewhat. What is your thoughts; kill or not to kill?

Congressional Jackazzez Do It Again

My Gracious! Is anyone watching the store while the thieves are allowed to plunder our nation's monetary coffers?

I am in firm belief that we need to just remove all our congressional leaders from office. Those people are just so out of touch with reality it is ri-damn-diculous.

"According to the Sunlight Foundation, a watchdog group that pores over congressional expense data, top salaries go to chiefs of staff, who earn around $120,000 a year. But farther down the pay scale, the group says the average salary for a communications director is about $58,000; schedulers average about $41,000 and staff assistants bring in about $30,000 a year."

Now my rant as follows:

These folks are on salary; meaning they are there to work either 10 or 100 hrs kinda like our military men or women. If these folks are not making enough money shouldn't they either look for another job just like the rest of Americans or their bosses raise their annual salaries to match or near match competitors? HELL last time I worked 12 hours on and 12 hours off for months on end; I did not get a nice bonus tucked into my paycheck. As a matter of freaking fact; paychecks would have been delayed for military men and women because our politicians can not pass an annual budget on time.

Another cause for concern. Military retirement benefits are on the chopping board again as well as health care premiums for retirees. I guess it is easy to cut from the life blood of our military working man/woman instead of cutting the fat from legislative arses first. I am sure without some Senators or Representatives running around pandering to big business; our American way of life would be in jepardy right?

Think of this ya'll; those Navy Seals who went and hunted down Bin Laden in a foreign country make approximately 60K annually if they are E6s with about 8-15 years of active duty. Our leaders earn three times as much in annual pay not including benefits; and here is the kicker. Those Seals will be denied access to care if they retire in 10 or 15 years (only to get 40% of their base pay as a retirement plan at age 57) if Congress gets their way. Because our Congressional leaders are so busy scratching their own behinds; they fail to realize our men and women give their bodies and souls to serve.

Then again, I wager to think our legislative branch feels they're in harm's way since they have to deal with occassional paper cut or overtime. GEESH Give me a break! Hell, I am willing to do any of their job for half of their salary. Seriously, doesn't 80K a year sound really good to you. I would not even ask for any of those perks either.

Do You Sometimes Question The Need

For posting a blog? Really, I have been thinking about it and questioning need and/or desire to write. At the time I started this blog; I was full of piss and vinegar ready to rant about things in my wayward mind. Now, I am looking back and wondering just what is the use of this blog. Things here are pretty durn quiet for us as a family.

We have a routine. Dad leaves at 4 am and doesn't return until near 5 pm/later. He may work overtime plus, there are workdays on the weekend. The boys sleep in til, I get them up for school. I use the mornings for focus, prayer, or meditation before trudging along in my daily chores -- sneak a soak in the tub. Really; we are not exciting people at all.

So why the need for a blog when the most exciting thing in our week or lately months is a rain fall equating to nearly 1/2 inch over two days of blessed grace.

Personally, I can not come up with a reason other than the occassional fellowship found by visiting others. Week in and week out; we are pretty much contained within our little five acres. Our animals with the exception of Banjo are not pets but, future food items. Our garden is pretty much ready to be plowed under for a second planting. I am not an exciting world chef, canning expert, sewing diva so why post about what others do better? I am just a plain ole middle-aged woman devoted to our family life.

Most days when I check in here; I can see no one visiting from the stats page.

So what do ya'll think; what's the purpose of this blog?

Free Audiobooks, Yes I Said Free

As ya'll know, we have a son with dysexlia and Irlens. Basically this means not only does he flip letters and symbols but, print moves on the page which makes reading a gut wrenching task. So I have a slow reader. Not only does Saenz has issues with reading but, the menfolk in my family do not like to pick up books.

Well if the Mohammed does not want to read the proverbial mountain of educational tomes -- then this is a way to bring the mountain to Mohammed.

My search began and sent me browsing eBay in search of books on audio tapes or cds in MP3 player format. Normal audio books are pricey even if purchased used or from a person who got them for free from a library.

I found a seller offering 233 classics for sale in MP3 zipped format on cd. Yeppers, I made an offer and 'dude/dudette;' ignored my inquiry since Friday. Now I hate to be ignored thus, I went searching. What I did notice after reading the seller's description he/she told 'potential' customers the books were offered for free in the public domain.

Yes, some file formats can be converted as well. So on this lovely Father's Day weekend; I am downloading books but, am not tied to my computer. In the next few weeks Saenz and the rest of us will be listening to literary classics while going about our daily life.

Thanks Sid for coming down this weekend. We enjoyed your visit as always. Dad just loves to put you to work around the place because well; you have the potential to be a work-a-holic like him. Haa Haa! We appreciate you helping to install the attic ladder in the 110+ temp and with back room cleanup. Many many thanks! Please come on by any time because we love your stories and funny immitations; you should be in the theatre.

This Wednesday, hubby and I were working together in the yard. Normally Cubby Bear would be outside with us but, he had some kind of stomach bug and stayed inside. Dad was watering the critters and I was gathering mesquite beans. So Hubby came over to help me and Banjo when, we heard a familiar and frightening sound. Little Banjo had disovered a 4' diamondback in our yard. Right next to the a/c unit; what a scary event and, the slithering mouth of venom crawled under a gap beneath the front porch. I can not remembered shaking so hard since, finding other critters face to face. There is just something about a mouth of angry venom staring you down to make you say a prayer for deliverance.

We were very lucky because normally Cubby Bear has Banjo chase him around the yard holding a hot dog as a form of entertainment while, we do our work. All I can say is a resounding "THANK YOU," to the universe and God for sparing us any snake bite. This reminds me; we still need to zip tie more deer netting to all our inner fence to keep those buggers from coming into our yard. With the extreme drought, we are so fortunate with critters looking for a drink of water not to have just migratory flocks of snakes running the yard.

May all who pass have a wonderful weekend. Spend time thanking your fathers, remembering them, and offering a little prayer to Him above.

18 Inches Equals Yummy Goodness for Winter

Hubby and I have been jobbing today besides mowing, errands and other chores. He brought me 4 new squash just as I had shredded 20 cups for squash bread to lay in the freezer for winter. I don't know about ya'll but, our old farm house just makes summer baking marathon sessions darn near impossible. Aren't these beauties?

I have been saving some seeds from these lovelies for next year and am thinking maybe I should run another giveaway for my followers. The squash are heirloom and will grow next summer quite nicely. This week; I am going to try sauteeing a few squash stalks and simmering some leaves; yes these can be eaten if cleaned properly.

You can also eat the leaves of your broccoli plants as well. Quite tasty and much milder than the actual heads of broccoli.

And don't forget to roast extra seeds for snacks. Get this; I love the taste of fresh shredded squash for a lite salad just add your favorite dressing or in my case; extra virgin olive oil and roasted seeds. YUM YUM

Here is our first batch of okra these will be dried for seed; the larger pods. The smallish pods, I will be slicing this up for some gumbo and other cajun dishes this fall. Did you know okra leaves can also be consumed as greens? Also the seeds can be roasted, ground and used as a coffee substitute which, after seeing the cost of a 36 ounce can of regular roast of Folgers is running near $11. This will be the next thing I will be trying plus growing chicory.

Cubby Bear just wanted to show off a little; I thought ya'll wouldn't mind. My next experiment will be shredding some green tomatoes for breads and of course Fried Green Tomatoes.

Oh yeah on another note; we will be harvesting some mesquite bean pods for flour; I still owe Mrs. Barbara over at

3 Acreshomestead a lb from my 500th blog post giveaway last year. Seems our trees took a year off from fruiting; I was quite surprised to see them loaded with pods due to our extreme drought.

Where Is God?

The reasons why I talk to our sons about my beliefs is to allow them a peek into what my character is, where I come from; and hopefully where I want to be in the future. Most of the time when it comes to ideals or beliefs; I let my sons work things out for themselves. However, I do believe I must teach or guide them in their paths to become honorable men and in this I am a servant. The other day we had an interesting conversation that kinda went like this:

Why do you stop to make sure others are okay on the side of the road?

Answer: 'Because I was taught you never know where Jesus or God is. Perhaps he is testing my learning as a child by waiting to see if I will do as I was taught to help others in need.'

What happens if they want to rob or kill you?

'The way I see that scenario is perhaps; it is God's way of calling me home to be with Him while, I am following my gut to help. Just maybe; he wants to see if I am afraid to follow or deny my beliefs. Yes, it is possible I may die but, there is also a chance I may not get to another opportunity meet my maker. If I ignore the 'call' or 'opportunity to serve,' will I hear his vioce again?

Now this line of reasoning and blind belief may be crazy to some. Heck even my husband doesn't subscribe to my point of veiw. Yet, I am a servant and will always be so. I am here to help others or to teach; that is my calling and I accept this. I not crazy enough though to allow strangers into my vehicle if I am alone or with our sons but, I always have a cell phone to offer. Most of the time, these strangers just wave me on so; I just get peace of mind they will not be left stranded. What I do want my sons to understand; you may be afraid of the wolf but, never stop being a person of faith and living.

The other night, while flipping channels I stopped on the new auditions of America's Got Talent. Let me tell you; I was blown away by this unassuming man named Ryan Andreas.

It was magical; he had no experience and you could tell his nerves were with him at the interview. When he paused to calm his nerves before he sang; I got a little worried so, I said a little prayer of hope. Then magic happened; here he's singing 'Angel,' by Sarah Mclachlan. His version and voice were so beautiful; I was moved to tears and chill bumps. He made this lovely iconic song his own; one day I hope to sing this song as a duet by both artists.

Bigger In Texas; Happy Birthday

Can you believe this zucchini? Weighs a little over 2 lbs.

I used the $20 so, you can have a point of reference. Hubby found this one tucked under leaves. Just amazing. So far we have eaten; raddishes, turnips, greens, onions, Greek oregano, zucchini, serranos, jalapenos, and yellow squash.

Our corn is now over our heads, quite surprising with all the high winds we have this year. We have to water nearly everyday to keep our garden up. Our normal temp is around 100 sometimes; much higher counting the humidity.

Our first apple fruit. If you look you can see the wind burn on one curled leaf. We are hoping as our fruit trees grow; they will toughen. We were told that we could not grow apples nor, grapes here. Well we have both so far. Hubby and I don't mess much with our trees, plants, vines; other than feed and water. We figure if it grows in the wild then it is meant to be here with us.

Do you see my Greek Oregano (Eleni) has a wide spread? Hubby trimmed back 1/3rd of her branches and I dried the leaves for cooking later in the year. It is crazy to know, a 0.5 ounce at a grocery store will cost a consumer $4 a bottle. So my little investment in Eleni has paid off. --- I got Eleni at WalMart for $1.77 and now look at her; soon she should flower for seed. :O)

Our jalapenos are hotter than the serranos. Crazy heat in these little fire bombs.

We spoil our little country pooch, Banjo. He gets bits and pieces of our meals. This little six pound wonder is a macho small dog; who regularly chases wild critters off our yard in the night. Here is he eating a slice of French toast; spoiled little monster he is!

This week has been a bit slower with the Memorial Day holiday. To honor a vet; our family laid a wreath on Mr. Dennis's grave; Mrs. Lily we are so sorry for your loss. We love you both.

Our son Sid's birthday is today. Happy 25th, May you have a 100 more years in which is grow and explore the world.

For those who are following our homeschool progress. We are using Sonlight for both boys this year. And both love it; especially Saenz. The stories included in this literature based program take him on adventures all over the world. On the weekend; I just type up a daily checklist of assignments or milestones he needs to accomplish. You will notice; I have not included physical or art education; we do those off line throughout the day. For current events, Time magazine just happened to have an article about the political unrest in Sanaa; so we will learn more about Yemen and the African continent.

I type up this checklist because Saenz; has trouble keeping his binder orgainzed as well as, other materials needed. This just works better for him over all because he can track his progress without the mess of multiple sheets of paper.

Don't forget this week on History Channel; there are special documentaries on the Civil War. 150 years since, we as a country have made lots of progress; the beauty of America is her flexibility to change as her people change.

America's strength is in her people's belief in our system; we know we things will eventually return to our norm; even after a disaster. Do You Fudge Some Days?

What I mean by fudge is; letting go and sitting back in quiet awe. Or allowing things to slip by like dusting, sweeping and mopping; when your floors look like hell. I just think we all are guilty of getting caught up in the minutiae of life. Some days, I have to leave television off or just have it on for white noise in the background.

Other days, the boys are all nice and kind to each other and I just scan them with suspicious eyes; wondering if they built a nuclear warhead when I turned my back. Normally, they are two sore-tailed cats who need to retreat to their respective marked terriority of 'MINE.' On these days, if they are happy to be brothers we sometimes cut school work in half. Sssssh, don't tell them the key to getting time off. :O)

Today was one of those days, we ran some eggs over to neighbor Mrs. Maguglin. Got home in time to be blessed with a visit from Mrs. Lily. My boys just adore her and Zephyr especially tries to keep her occupied with her stories of his Lego battle warriors. We hope you enjoy the onions, mustard greens, and squash we sent home with you. Thanks Mrs. Lily for coming over, no worries we will pick up in the morning where the boys left off in their school work.

A thing I miss though since lasik, has been jumping on my Husky and mowing the grass. With my eyes being so sensitive to bright light and irritants; I can only look out my window with a longing of horsepower. HEE HEE it is so hard to give over the keys to hubby on the weekends.

As these days of summer are bearing down on us; please take some time to fudge days of work now and again. I am sure our Creator doesn't mind a slower pace.

Just a Happy Life, Who Needs More?

I am amazed at the strength, love, and joy I receive from just being with my men. This week, Zephyr graduated from Kindergarten and has started his first grade school year. We did not have a formal ceremony since, I could not find the correct church in Beeville. So instead, we picked up Zephyr's favorite --- cup cakes in his birth theme of Halloween.

My husband has been taking care of all the outdoor chores this passed week. My surgery was awesome and I can see at 20/20 for each eye. Though I am taking extra care while my eyes are healing from lasik. Hubby has been taking up all my outdoor chores; he did not want me to get anything in my eyes since, he had an infection after his lasik. Let me tellyou; this man is always working even when he is at home. He is a Mr. Fixit. I just love him to pieces; the almost 15 years we have been together has flown. He is my best friend.

Our Ladies Bug beetles are almost fully formed. Strange critters these little wonders of nature.

Today, we took the boys to the Lexington Musuem. Both boys love anything and everything to do with the military. So it was a treat for them to touch or sit inside exhibits. We are hoping to foster their desire to learn in any method we can find. For the next two years, we will be taking them back to the Lexington, Texas State Aquarium, and Zoo often. I could tell each of them were quite happy to be here with us. I love to walk behind them and watch from a distance.

Little Brig Bird

Can You See Me Now? Lasik Day, Garden Bounty

My Bush Baby look for last exam.

Let me begin by saying; I am a very blessed woman. Thanks to my hubby for driving me to have my lasik done. While I am currently doing this entry through protective shields and dark terminator glasses; I am happy. We arrived early and sat down with the boys to do some school work in the waiting room.

I snapped this one of myself right before I went into the surgurical suite. Good Grief, I am middle aged; look at that double chin plus numbing eye drops doesn't help the ensemble either. LOL

What my hubby, boys, and other patients were able see in the lobby. What I was able to see was blur and orange shiny lights. I also got the pleasure of feeling the pressure as the doctor put some type of retractor into my eye socket.... YUM YUM are you sick yet?

About this time, the laser started to do its job and I was treated to the smell smiliar to burning hair, the sound of a tazer being fired, and just some tugging as the flap was made.

Then the process was over in less than 20 seconds on my right eye; which was corrected for distance vision. So next my left, which was corrected for near sighted vision: 17 seconds.

Then after I was done, I was led into a waiting area for a final check. The girl Megan that went after me was super scared and I just talked to her so she could calm down some. I felt bad for her because she was so nervous. Strange how I was not nervous nor scared. I followed the doctor's instructions while sitting in the chair. Less than 30 mins; I was out the door and in the back seat with my Cubby Bear.

About this time, the only real discomfort began. My left eye started burning like I had been poked with a hot stick but, I kept putting drops in to keep my eyes moist; only a few sharp pains but nothing to freak out my boys or let my hubby know about.

I just feel so damnably sexy here----SIT BACK AND KISSED MY SELF!

Cubby Bear wore his shades to match both his parents and rubbed my hand out of sympathy. At this point he must have seen my eyes tearing. I just love my little man.

Fresh turnips and two types of squash. Can't believe how big our veggies are turning out.

Now 7 hours after surgery, I am resting with my protective shields and dark glasses still. Drops every so often for irritation and of course antibiotic drops as well. Tomorrow, I have a follow up exam to check my healing process. Let me tell you, I can SEE. Strange but I can see leaves on the trees, roadsigns and such even through all my safety gear. Can't wait to see what my new 'eyes' encounter tomorrow.

So Much Green, Just Beautiful

After our rainfall, I got the pleasure of mowing and not complaining at all!

Except for all the weeds after the rain; lots of work to do yet.

Hubby tilling so, we can lay in cukes, cantalope, more corn.

The green onions hubby pulled and I later cleaned, cut, and oven dried for later use. My house smelled like onions for a day. Simple instructions, clean them well, cut them thin, lay on paper towels on a cookie sheet, put in oven 125-50 F (8 hours for 1 lb of cuttings), stir occassionaly, and check as more often as the moisture leaves.

You can also dry foods by pressing between two screen doors on towel layers, put up on blocks in your yard if you live in hot place without humidity. Solar dry is fine but, watch for bugs, ants, and mildew. I can't use this method because our humidity is so high most of the time === so much for the desert eh?

I wonder if squash leaves can be consumed. Must do some research since, we have such large leaves. What do ya'll think? I know you can use the flowers in almost anything from soups, breads, stuffed, and friend. HUMMMMMS here.......

Momentous Thunderstorm Complete With Rain

I know all of ya'll have been following the floods in the Mississippi valley area. I just can not imagine scope of devastation of all that water. Seems Mother Nature delivered not only record amounts of snow this passed winter and spring but as it melted; has joined with all the rain in the region. All that water has to go somewhere; especially down hill/river.

Here in my part of South Texas; we had not received any rain since the 14th of March. This has caused our area to be in a drought situation and under a burn ban since mid Febuary. No joke, we have cracks in our property from lack of water. This passed Thursday, we had answered prayers in the form of a lovely mid-morning of rain. Let me tell you, it was such music to our ears -- we turned off all the lights and television to hear the sound being drummed on our metal roof.

One and one-half inches of beautiful life sustaining rain!

Here is our latest observation of the natural world. Lady Bug land, I had no idea their larva stage had them looking like alien alligators. Soon, they will crawl to the top of the habitat and begin their pupa stage.

This weekend, Sid came down so he and his father could replace the leaking radiator in his car. Let me tell ya, those two men were cut from the same cloth. It has been a blessing for my hubby to have some male bonding time this weekend.

Well I have some grass to mow, thankfully. I plan on visiting all I have been following this week since, I now have time to breathe and slow down.

With the new school year starting on this Monday, I am excited to get our new curriculum under way so Saenz, Zephyr and I will stay busy this summer.

What are ya'll going to do? Any summer vacation (holiday) plans? My holiday plans are to have lasik eye surgery this Friday. I am so excited at the prospect of not wearing glasses; I am fit to be tied.

OH SPECIAL NOTE: Next Saturday, our Cubby Bear will be awarded his Kindergarten diploma. We are so excited for him and his accomplishments. YEAH ZEPHYR!

Have You Ever Been Excited And Scared

At the same time? Well yesterday I had the first exam for having lasik eye surgery to see if my vision was in range. Let me tell you; I was uber happy to find I passed the first appointment / exam with flying poor vision. My right eye is 20/40 okay not bad -- however, my left eye is 20/400; no wonder my bifocals cause me to swim when adjusting to new glasses. I can remember putting on my first pair of eye glasses as a child and being able to see a blade of grass from a standing position.

No matter how many times I try to explain to my husband; I can not see well enough with glasses in bright Texas sunlight to drive in horrible traffic --- too much glare from not only my glasses, the car's windshield, and other cars --- I have to compensate for jacked up tunnel vision. He just doesn't get it because he can see even before he had lasik. So perhaps by next Saturday. I will be on par with him.

Since we were in Corpus and we had promised a trip to the Texas State Aquarium (TSA). We went and also renewed our family membership for another two years. It is great the TSA now offers a military discount on the family membership. Woooo Hooo! I am all for savings and any activity that is educational. (Thanks my Bean)

Nose to Nose; two predators meet for the a discussion.

Zephyr can tell you the difference between poisonous (ingested, absorbed, breathed in) and venomous (injected). This Lion Fish is venomous because it injects its venom like a snake. The poisonous tree frog secretes poison on its skin. Did you know that some of the tree frogs poisons can be used for human medications?

Zephyr loves the shark exhibit and could spend hours just watching them. (I was like that as a child; sharks are so interesting to watch.)

I hope all of you who pass here are doing well. To answer John's question; Nope on the rain though we are supposed to be at 70% chance today. I have my feathers crossed, been saying prayers, and have my little Cubby Bear doing a rain dance.

Isn't is a strange and wonderful world? We as humans don't understand Mother Nature's way of giving too much of something or not giving enough.

Big Box Day Finds Us Happy

Yesterday we received two large boxes from Sonlight Curriculum. Saenz needs a brush up with Core F on world history and literature since I focused heavily on math, science, journaling, handwriting, reading, grammar, and research skills to get him firmly on the sixth grade level. Saenz will also be taking a 6/7th with Pre-Alegbra mix to get him up to level with his former classmates; a far cry from being at a middle third grade math level last April when we pulled him out of public school.

Another note, Saenz will have to take a course in spelling skills; being a dyslexic with Irlens makes that skill extremely challanging. While I know WORD does a spellcheck if he types out his assignments; he still needs to learn the basics just as well as Zephyr.

I did make the decision this year to hold off on adding a foreign language with Saenz until next year. It is hard enough for him to read as it is in English so, instead I will be adding Spanish and Latin songs for him to get used to hearing (of course) this will help Zephyr as well.

Zephyr will be starting his first grade this week; reading finally kicked in for him; I was starting to worry by Febuary that I would not be able to start 1st grade on time. Just since March he has went from only recognizing 10 Dolch sight words to 140 just this week. Huge steps for our little cubby bear; he is now happy to sit with a book and read to us or anyone who will listen. Zephyr really soared this year in math, science, rote memorization, reasoning, and story telling; his Kindergarten graduation (cap and tassel) walk will take place on the 21st.

I am happy to have my hubby supporting our efforts to raise our boys to be happy critical thinkers.

Our boys were thrilled to see the books they will be using to study for the next 180 school days. Since we school year around; we take breaks as needed. That is a lovely thing about homeschooling your children; if child or parent needs a day off -- we take one.

Cubby is holding his math curriculum. I know he will breeze through this because he is already begining to understand the concepts of fractions, money, and multiplication. This set also came with a neat box set of manipulatives to help Zephyr by using visual and hands on learning tools.

The boys are basically chomping at the bit for Saenz's lesson to get this project in which, they will learn how to make ink like in ancient China. I believe this will be in week 26 so, they have a bit of a wait. Another note, I guess there was a computer glitch with our order because the shipment was missing the first grade instructor guides, binder, and language arts manual. Oh well, I have already sent Sonlight an email to inform them of the mix up. All is good though because I can just whip out the math and continuing reading lessons with no worries.

Okay ya'll do you see my blood shot eyes? LOL That is not because I have been drinking.... Nope seems the entire property is covered in pollens: live oak and ragweed. It has been a tough week on my head with all the stuff floating in the air. All is good though in the garden so far we have: jalapeno, serrano, habanero, yellow squash, zucchini, onion, mustard greens, raddishes, maters, okra, Greek oregano, turnips, carrots, sweet & white taters, and corn is at the 3 foot mark. So nice to have a garden....

My Thoughts On Bin Laden

Personally, I do understand the party atmosphere that the news of Bin Laden's death has caused. On the other hand, I sit and think about how he was able to escape from the United States. He had not only his own inherited monies, US education, and a thorough grasp of westernized living/ways of thinking but, the financial, spiritual, and physical protection of many others who would do harm to America. Yes, he had friends, family, and other idealists that kept him hidden for the last twenty years to include those in governments, military, and other far reaching people of power. Bin Laden had his hands bloodied with not only thousands of Americans deaths but, also of tens thousands of others to include Muslims world wide. Corruption, avarice and indifference is what brought the terriorists to our shores in the first place. Today, I am not celebrating his death but, will again start watching what our government does while most are not paying attention. The question is; will you continue to slap ourselves on the back or will you stand watch for the other shoe to drop?

Painted Lady Release, Prayers For Those Affected by Tornados Yesterday

This morning we are taking advantage of the cooler weather. We have our windows open since it will not be in the 100s for the first time in about a week. Our hearts, minds and prayers are with friends and family affected by the storms yesterday in South East and East Coast. I am worried for all those folks still trapped or missing in Alabama, my folks live in the area but, are safe.

Zephyr, Saenz, and I released our Painted Lady butterflies; we waited one day because the weather was awful here with really hot temps (over 100) and high wind gusts. We are thrilled to report four of them are now living somewhere in our yard healthy and happy.

Our lone hold out, I am guessing by Friday or early Saturday this lone fella will be ready to join his friends. If you double click the image; you can see its wing outline and it has grown darker like the others did.

Zephyr learned that when butterflies rest they fold their wings together and mostly fly in daylight hours. They have to emerge head down so their wings will not have to fight gravity and dry in the proper shape for flight. Moths on the other hand usually fly at or near night time, don't eats as adults, have no probiscus, and rest with their wings open. Cool eh?

I will order the catepillars again next year; Zephyr is still begging for the Hissing Cockroach kit --- lets just say I am not too thrilled with the idea. LOL

Zephyr is sporting one of his favorite shirts given to him by Mrs. Lily (thank you!). This afternoon, I will be placing an order for his 1st multi subject curriculum from Sonlight. After Zephyr's Kindergarten graduation in May; I will give him a week off and then start his first grade lessons. If all goes well Zephyr will be ready to start the second grade in Jan - Feb time frame 1/2 a year ahead because I am not going to slow down or hold him back. I am only getting Saenz the core for his 7th grade year and first year Latin from Sonlight. We already have enough science and math curriculum to carry Saenz through the 8th grade.

Last night, I watched a new program on the History Channel called THE SHAPE OF THE STATES. Have you seen it? Very interesing material, I think I am going to order the book to incorporate it into our history lessons. Did you know that the US had more than 50 states apply for statehood; for example the Republic of Franklin in what is now Tennesee and 'Deseret (Utah)' was not sucessful in joining the union? I knew about common wealth of Puerto Rico and D.C.

Chrysalides, Earth Day, Egg Hunt, Confetti Eggs, Egg Golf

It has been a rather busy week; the boys and I are watching our Painted Ladies quite closely now. The fifth catepillar was not dead but, was later than its siblings crawling to the top -- by a full three days. Good thing I waited to transfer them into the butterfly garden. So any day now, we will have five butterflies to release.

So now there are five; with them growing darker by the day.

BTW Did you know that trees can be wind burned? Well we found out our pear trees are having a rough time due to all the high winds we have been having.

We planted 2 peach trees with the help of Sid and 12 tomato, 6 zucchini, and four watermelon for our Earth Day contribution. I just love that happy face!

On Easter Sunday, before our grand daughters Jaylin and Sarah along with Zephyr zipped outside to find the bounty the bunny left for them. We watched the video HE HAS RISEN as our lesson about the meaning of and importance of celebrating Easter and the life of Jesus.

Then the kiddos took turns whacking each other on the noggins with confetti eggs.

Then for a little entertainment by Grandpaw, he practiced his golf swing with a few of the confetti eggs.

Sid loves golf just as much as his dad!

Banjo of course loved all the attention he received this weekend from Sid, Junio, Jayline, Sarah, Saenz, and Zephyr. Banjo even was the object of a few confetti eggs' attention. Thanks for bringing the girls down; hope ya'll come back real soon please.

All I know is this weekend though busy -- was just a peaceful weekend spent with family. We will continue to pray for world peace, happiness, blessings, and guidance for all!

We Have A Visitor - Blue Indigo Juvenile

I am thoroughly convinced that snakes are territorial creatures who; have a space in which they hunt, breed, and live. I have seen this one right outside my window for about two weeks now but, have not had a camera to catch a shot. Well I got lucky this time because our special guest had helped himself to a meal so I got a couple of shots of him/her. This is a blue indigo snake and is definitely only a juvenile at just over three feet.

I was standing less than a foot away to take these shots. It is such a lovely snake and has been documented at up to 8.75 feet long. We had one that our second year here that was pretty close to 9 feet and its body was as thick as my forearm; heavy bodied snake. We respect these beautiful animals and feel blessed that one has taken up home in our inner yard. Which means less rats, mice, and possible rattlers where our boys tend to play.

Saenz loves these.

Crooked yellow neck squash will be ready soon. This plant has four fruits.

We picked some snacks right out of our garden: some onion to go with our zucchini and of course right out of the garden raddishes -- rinse and eat. (We got the raddish seed from a lady in England who sent them as a gift.)

Life is good and we are counting our blessings and saying thanks!

Painted Ladies, Ants, and a Mad Frog; OH MY!

Our painted lady catepillars have now started their pupa stage with their chrysalis forming/hardening. Of the five catepillars we received only one seems to have died. The rest are now safely attached to the lid of the jar.

Day one Monday 19 April: Going to Pupa.

Day 2, April 20th: All 4 are in pupa, notice no legs or hair protrusions.

Yesterday, we got in the ants for the ant farm. Let me tell ya, those suckers were really angry being in that tube. Follow directions and definitely refrigerate them for 2 minutes. Hubby was the one who put them into their farm. He did such a great job only one escapee made a run for it. That little bugger tried to sting as soon as it was touched. The above picture was just after one hour after farm arrival. We gave them water, a sliver of apple, a piece of bread, and a corn chip; mind you really small pieces.

This picture was taken after six hours of them being left alone in the down stairs (darkened) bathroom. Notice they now have a pantry started on the left hand side, have moved their dead, have started tunneling.

This morning, we have found them to have built several chambers, more tunnels and have cleaned up their den. After a few days of rest, we will add a few more drops of water to see how the ants react plus maybe add a piece of mango.

Zephyr is holding our first zucchini of the season. Happy to say, he will help me chop it up for our dinner plates later.

Other garden news: we tried those battery powered mole/gopher chasers. So far, they have worked perfectly since, the little fur balls have left the area. Key to sucess with those 'chasers' is to not let your soil dry out completely since, watering helps to conduct / amplify the noise they emit.

Our newest threat are from rabbits coming into the yard. So, we will be hanging deer netting onto our fence to keep them at bay. Also to combat the fire & red ant problem we have; we are using orange oil mixed with water to 'kill - discourage' ants from taking up home in our garden beds. This is not a QUICK solution; you have to keep spraying the mixture because it is not a poison, will not harm people or critters without exo-skeletons. For those who want to know; Orange Oil dissolves the shell of the ants exoskeleton thus killing the ants. However if you just want to ants to nest somewhere else use; corn meal or pour boiling water onto their mound.

Keep in mind, 'natural solutions' take a longer (much) period to work. Natural solutions are not pesticides and have to be given time to work their magic. When we have a problem with leaf eating critters, I just mix a solution of dish soap, water and cayenne pepper to spray the leaves. Again this has to be done on the days not watering and takes time but is not harmful to humans.

For my friend John over in England. Sorry, he did not have a box to piss in but; this is the 'Mad' frog we seen at the zoo.

Oh and for our Jewish friends hope you have a wonderful Passover. For those who celebrate Easter; have a great service and week. We are expecting our family this weekend: Junior and his two girls, and Sid for the weekend. YIKES maybe the Easter Bunny will make a stop at Grandpaw's and Grandmaw's this holiday.

Celebrating 100! With A Zoo Day

Zephyr has been working overtime to learn his sight words. Each morning, we read his primary books and practice using flash cards to reinforce sounding out words.

Well his dad told him, we will go to the Zoo once you hit a 100.

GUESS WHAT! Last Friday Zephyr made the cut off; I love the dangling carrot to ensure he works towards a educational goal that is meaningful to all of us.

San Antonio does not advocate texting and driving. Awesome!

We got a kick out of this billboard.

It was already shaping up to be a hot day. Zephyr tested the temps first.

Dad got a boo boo! First Aid was called to clean up this scrap by a stub that was not removed from too close to the sidewalk.

This kind employee gave him a cold soda while we were waiting. Nice people at the zoo. Then of course we always head to the reptile house; seems our boys love reptiles. (I wonder from who they got that glitch in their personality.)

Green Mamba, we could watch this fiesty snake all day.

These Geckos were as long as my hand; about 6 inches.

Felt sorry for this bullsnake in with the western diamondback rattler. But for the average lay person to see a bullsnake next to a diamondback is a good thing. For lots of peeps will kill a snake thinking it is venomous. We don't practice the killing of snakes just because they are venomous.

Do you see the flamingo in the middle - take note of it standing/sleeping on its knees?

Did I tell you that is was hot? Already in the 90s with high humidity by noon.

We got a kick out of this jungle fowl cock, following Saenz's every move.

Have you ever seen one of these Vulturine Guinea Fowl? This was our first time.

The San Antonio Zoo has several American Bald Eagles because they were wounded and lost a wing due to somebody shooting them. This stately and curious bird is part of a breeding program. Very sad way for such a beautiful bird to live out its life instead of in the sky.

The boys and I got a kick out of looking the different types of bird's eggs and nests. Amazing the variety that birds possess.

Our boys inside the lory exhibit. These are some noisey little critters who eat nectar and soft fruits -- and they do bite / try to remove shiny objects like hair clips.

Just before Zephyr and I went into the Butterfly Garden. This is where Zephyr and I could spend many hours if not for Dad and Saenz waiting for us. LOL

(Our own painted lady catepillars are just entering the pupa stage. We will post updates for ya'll tomorrow.)

Now this Atlas Moth, was our special find this trip. These moths get really large with the females having up to a 12 inch wing span. If you look closely, each wing tip has a 'image' of a snake -- to ward off predators. Also we learned these beautiful creatures only live a few weeks, do not eat, and have no mouth parts. Did you know farmers consider some butterfly (catepillar stage) species a pest that cause crop damage? Who knew but, know we understand why only certain butterfly catepillars are for sale for educational purposes.

Overall, our trip was a wonderful day! Thank you Dad for taking a day off to spend learning new things with us. So we are off to enjoy a second day with Dad home. Whoop! Talk to ya'll tomorrow.

From the apple tree we thought had died due to the ice storm on Feb 4, 2011. No apples but all is good maybe next year.

Our turkey poults are loving their new digs.

The painted lady butterfly caterpillars are getting busy to change. Zephyr wants to touch them because they are so fuzzy.

Onto Other News:

As far as other events: Zephyr has been super busy learning his Dolch sight words just last week he only knew 30 and this week he is working his way up to 100 from 65 yesterday. His celebration for acheivement will be a trip to the San Antonio Zoo with his Dad. He is already making plans to see the Prairie Dogs, Bird Aviary, and Butterfly Garden.

To give Saenz a more structured learning environment; he is currently enrolled into Time4learning to review all his 5th/6th grade requirements. Later today, we will be discussing how to do an outline in order to write a paper, essay, review, or other document.

Next week we are starting back with reading classic literature because I feel it will build their critical thinking, moral questioning, and logic. I am toying with getting a Latin Primer (as suggested by reading The Well Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical Education). I do agree that since Latin is a dead language and is the basis for many languages -- its syntax or ruless of usage will not change; and is a natural progression -- especially with learning English and a foreign language. Yeppers, I will be learning as I teach them with exposure to the romance language Spanish. We have our own built-in tutor with hubby. :O)

Zephyr is really moving along now with sight words and can read a few primary books; he will need to be exposed to more language, ideas, history, and government. It is funny, I only quiz, teach, review with Zephyr at 20 minute intervals throughout the day yet, he picks up information so quickly. His variety of knowledge is building a questioning mind which I adore. Saenz usually spends between 2 to 4 hours daily on studying, reading, or reviewing materials and has made two years of progress in mathematics from just last April. By the end of next year he will be at or above his given grade level. I am so proud of both our boys for making such strides.

I also want to thank all the folks who have give advice: Grumpy Gramps, Jana, Sobrina, Tricia, Jen, and the plethora of other blogs I read to get ideas or to just vent to; so I can become a better mother and teacher.

I also want to thank my hubby for without your support; Saenz would have been a lost soul in the school system. I would not be able to stay at home and educate our sons. 'Thank-You!' for making our family possible.

Continuing Resolution? Just Shakes Head

Okay all -- year -- month and especially this week; I have been keeping an eye on the congressional budget fight over 'riders' -basically add ons to fund things like Planned Parenthood / NPR / EPA monitoring etc. etc. etc..... All the while, ignoring the fact the US Government was essentially not funded properly. Though congressional leaders did pass 'Stop Gaps' measures to limp along and wage war on three fronts, government funding, and pet projects that should be privatized; up and running.

Mind you; Gentle Readers this budget was for Fiscal Year 2011 which actually began on 1 Oct 2010.

Seems our congressional leaders did not want to make decisions in 2010 since, the Republicans were poised to take over the House and maybe the Senate during the mid-term elections in which Republicans did take the House. Sadly, we pay 435 representatives and 100 senators approximately 14.5K monthly (7.75 million) to do their jobs and yet; we still have no budget.

Get this ---- Fiscal Year 2012 budget should already be on the table for debate. So while this event will again be in the news all week just remember: Men and Women who are in uniform will again see only a partial payment if this mess does not get worked out by Friday.

If the budget is not layed in; our military will still get up and wear the uniform, possibly be killed in action while their loved ones wait for a pay check or back pay. I know from personal experience as a young enlisted -- single / without children; I had barely two nickels to rub together even before I became a married Airman let alone a six month savings built up. When I saw the one congressional woman on the news complaining she lived pay day to pay day and needed her congressional pay check to survive on 14.5K monthly. I wanted to climb through the screen........

If you want to know what your military members are being paid for basic pay; remember the bulk of the military are young soliders, marines, airmen, sailors who have been in less than 1 enlistment just look at the pay scale for an E1 through E5. Then you tell me if we need to pay a congressional member as much as we do?????

I Wish They Would Flipping Make Up Their Minds

Okay Ladies and Gents,

This post is a rant so if you can't handle the heat time to push away from your computer screen.

As you know Congress is considering allowing for a government shut down. This means employees would go into a furlough (not be able to go to work) but, would still be employees with no affect to their status or benefits.

However, a two week furlough actually means 1000s of workers (millions of mouths will go without money for basic necessities of which my hubby is one) -- would go without a paycheck for over a month. Mind you, we the American taxpayer pays for Congress to be in their seats to work out this issue in a timely manner.

REALLY???? I MEAN REALLY?

Consider, this budget arguement has been going on for well over a flea flicking year. With just limp along amendments to keep the government moving along until our Congress decides to get off their collective Arses and get to work really building a compromise. Now what will happen if a shut down does go into effect.

Our military will continue to show up and aptly do their given jobs. Until they basically run out of bullets, pens, and paper etc. etc. etc and then start charging. Civilians employees have been hard at work determining which workers are considered emergency essential to keep basic operations up and running say like Command and Control centers, transportation, hospitals, comm, and so on. If we run out of bandaids --- government credit card holders simply go out and charge for them. (and many other supplies until maxed out)

Now when this furlough happened back in 95 / 96, I was in uniform. I showed up for work and my civilian counter parts did not. I got to not only do my job (as did other military personnel) but, I picked up the work of those who were not allowed to come in. Then later, when the budget was passed, all went back to normal and those employees were given back pay.

YEPPERS for the job they were not allowed to come do but, in essence I and many others did for them.

Yes I am pissed! As I have been keeping check on what is happening on both the House and Senate floors; I see this headline today:

"Obama announces reelection bid 04/04/11 President will begin to raise money for 2012 campaign next week."

Really?

Mr. Obama,

I have kept quiet for a long time watching the kind of job you have been doing for the last three years. Sadly Sir, I am not impressed with your leadership. As the leader of the free world, you have not inspired those of us in the ranks to want to rise up, exceed excellence, do their given jobs, and take over the lead. Could you please just have our elected officials get off their arses and stop grand-standing over nit noy pieces of legislation in order, to get themselves re-elected?

While, my family will be able to weather a two week layoff; not many in our (US) economy can not do so. And for the love of GOD and our country please post the 'real' numbers of unemployment some where. You know those folks who have been out of work so long; they no longer show up on the COOKED BOOKS of the government keeps releasing. I have yet to see; the 'transparency' you promised.

I implore each congressional member to include supreme court justices and POTUS give up their paychecks for double the amount of time civilian are furloughed but, still report to work. See how it really affects you after awhile.

OH Wait! it will not have that big of an affect on your check books because; you earn 3 to 10 times the amount say that my husband earns and your healthcare, lodging, transportation is paid for by the American people.

So those who are continuing to read this post. Say a pray for the many who may be facing this impending event if our elected leaders don't sit down and work on our budget. Personally, I am going to vote each of the people out and seriously pray for a better system of checks and balances.

Butchering Day: Warning Farm Animal

It is a hard fact of life on a farm for folks who raise animals to stock their own pantry or freezer. Today we butchered a sow for freezer.

First she was put down quickly.

Hung her up

Skinned her; she was over 300 lbs.

As you can see she is as long as my hubby is tall.

She had lots of Manteca (lard) as you can see. Now I am cooling the meat before cutting it into package size bags for the deep freezer. We have another sow that will be ready this fall just in time to replace what we use of this one. In June/July, our older lazy hens will join the fray. Our animals are all well fed and taken care of; we teach our children to respect our animals who in turn give us meat.

The boys and I discovered these moths on our back porch answering Nature's call to procreate. They stayed like this the entire day. My simple explanation to Saenz and Zephyr was they were making larva (babies). Saenz is at the 'gross out' stage when concerning reproduction while Zephyr is really hooked on all things related to girls.

Our little farm garden is expanding. Currently we have planted: cabbage, kale, broccoli, brussel sprouts, 2 types of carrots, asparagus, onions, cilantro, 3 types of tomatos, turnips, leeks, curly leaf lettuce, mustard greens, sweet potato, beets, raddishes, parsley, pole beans, cow peas, collard greens, okra, butternut squash, zucchini, crooked neck squash, jalapeno, habanero, oregano, 2 apple trees, 2 pear trees, 2 pomegranite, 2 black berry, 1 concord grape, 4 muscadine grape, and 1 lime (it survived the ice storm on 4 Feb).

I have plans to add: corn, more variety of tomato, cucumber, watermelon, cantaloup, vine peach, chives, Greek oregano, Mexican oregano, basil, lettuces, garlic, spinach, and many others. We have plans to add fruit and nut trees as follows: peach, fig, lime, lemon, orange, avocado, walnut, pecan and maybe a hickory nut if we can find it.

One of our garden beds is only 15' by 100' feet, the other is 15' by 15', to have a garden the size to feed one person, a 1000 sq foot garden is required to feed one person for a year if crops are rotated -- or so the books say. So this year, we are experimenting and will probably double it next year. Since we are novice growers it is best to start small and manageable until you get good dirt stained nails under your belt.

The one thing our farm sorely needs is rain. Our area is in a drought situation already with a burn ban since last month. So if ya'll will do a rain dance and push it our way; we would really appreciate it. Those dark skies were full of promise yet, no rain. SIGH

Now onto homeschool news, we have ordered and recieved our butterfly garden and ant farm -- just awaiting the occupants to arrive by mail. Thanks to Jana C over at http://homeschoolingintexas.blogspot.com/; Zephyr was super stoked and wanted to try the same home growing experiments as her children. We have also ordered the Lady Bug habitat, some bug models to build, and Story of the World Vol 1 & 2. What I like about the Story of the World (history), is the lessons are short enough to keep even Zephyr's attention. So thanks Jana for cluing us in our your finds from Nest Learning.

There are a few of resources, I would like to pass on to other homeschooling parents. Time4learning is a wonderful site, that actually tracks multiple core subjects, progress reports, time spent logged in, unit studies; I use it when I don't have time to one-on-one and have to work about the place or just need a break. Super Teacher Worksheets for printables and other down loadables like progress reports, report cards, lesson planning and such. On April 11th, Super Charged Science's Aurora will be hosting a free tele-video class. For her site, a yearly membership is $55 however, she has free class materials or videos from time to time. I especially like the way she has her syllabus drawn out. It is a schedule, I can keep with the materials I already have on hand.

I don't know about other home school parents but, I don't follow a set curriculum. I just find most are far too expensive, limited in scope, or have a 'Christian slanted theme to the lessons.' While, I don't mind religious based learning, I just find some subjects relating to Math and Sciences to be distracting when a subject is presented with a religious view. I am a strictly the facts kind of learner and this hold true with Saenz as well.

I just want to say, Thanks to all my followers for reading. I know my posts have become sporadic. I apologize; it is just a busy time of year for us with farming, gardening, and teaching lessons. I hope you still find the content interesting enough to leave comments from time to time.

Fun Schooling, A Little Bit of Rain, Texas Star Energy Refund

This weekend we experimented with different measurments of vinegar and baking soda. What we learned is; we should wait until the wind is not a factor. (hard to do where we live.)

In this attempt we place vinegar into the bottle first then had the baking soda stuffed in the balloon. We noted that the vinegar / baking soda solution became cold during the mixing process.

Next we tried behind a wind block (the car), with baking soda added into the bottle with a vinegar filled balloon. In this experiment the boys and I learned not to do this way again. Because we could not add enough vinegar to react to the baking soda because -- a barrier is formed atop the baking soda when the two meet. Our hypothesis --- try again on a windless day, the solution cools during the reaction, and how the experiment is set up will affect its outcome.

Hubby and I decided to start teaching stories from this Children's Bible to help give our boys some lessons in our faith that is centered in Christianity. Later in the year, I will introduce them to lessons from the Torah, Quran, Buddhist texts, and other 100+ faiths of the world. Also, this will give them some sort of religious foundation to build up from so they can make the decision about which faith they will follow if any.

Now who could not use some 'found monies?' I was doing a happy dance to finally recieve this check from the Texas Appliance Mail-In Rebate program. Wooo Hooo! Gotta love going green when it actually pays some green backs into ones' pockets. :O)

Finally, we were the recipiants of this lovely gift called rain. Let me tell you, our ground was so hard from lack of moisture; that small cracks can be found. I am guessing this little soaking gift from heaven will turn our grass green.

Now this is one website I wanted to pass on to all of you. I found it a few months back and there was not much to offer. However, since then Bill Gates has made a large donation and others to get this website up and fully functional. This website has thousands of videos with lessons from 9 to 15 mins in length showing how to work math problems and other subjects. So far there is an extensive amount of simple math, algebra, physics, finance, economics, accounting and many other subjects to be added. This website is free (accepts donations) and a parent can set up an account to monitor and track their students (children) working the problems or lessons they try. You can not beat free especially when it is a quality program.

You go from being afraid of your birds; to net catching --- to walking up and placing your hand on their back then carrying them out of the garden for the 50th time.

Much has changed with our boys since we moved here to 'our little slice of heaven' in on January 7th, 2006. Yet one thing has remained the same; you can take the boy out of the country but, you can't take the country out of the boy.

Awaiting the arrival of our older children and grand kids. Wooo Hoo! I am hope your slice of heaven is as blessed as ours.

Gardening and Homeschool Lessons: Week 2

How lucky for us that one of Mr. Larry's gifts (Grumpy Gramps) was a subscription to Weekly Reader program with the added Life Pac for science. So, when I broke open the packet yesterday Zephyr found this issue right off the bat.

Later today, we will water the beans we have already placed in the yard. And will decide where to place our melons and squash since, they are about ready to put in the garden. It has been a bumpy road trying to fence the chickens out of the garden area we have next to our house. The feathered monsters keep trying to get to our tender seedlings. I will take some pictures later of our progress when it is not so cool outside.

Brrrrr, in the 40s this morning but is around 65 degrees now. For South Texas it would be a really stellar day if not for the chilly wind. Hopefully this afternoon will be warm enough to take the boys outside for watering and transplanting. Zephyr woke up with a cold this morning -- thus I am waiting for more heat.

Sad news, one of the turkey poults died late yesterday. I have no idea why -- they are not over crowded, are dry and warm. Grrrr, now I understand a bit better why there is a saying:

TURKEYS LIVE TO DIE...... Kinda sad really

No news on my sister yet. She was still in the hospital yesterday with the staff running a bunch of test. So far, nothing has shown to be the cause of her strokes. I firmly believe the science of medicine is really an ART form instead of science since, each individual is unique. What will work for a few will not work for others. Hopefully soon; she will find a doctor who listens to her entire history and is clued in enough to treat her as an individual instead of as a member of the herd.

Okay, off to teach some phonics and hopefully more reading to Zephyr. I hope your slices of heaven are full of blessings.

Do You Ever Feel Like You've Hit a Wall?

For each break through we have in homeschooling a road block pops up to whip us about for awhile. It took me a better part of this passed six months to get Zephyr to a place where he is learning how to read. He now can pick out about ten words and knows half of the alphabet's begining sounds.

His first sentences are:

The cat sat on my hat.
The boy wants a toy.
Zephyr is a boy.
Mom is a girl.
Zephyr wants a toy.

Not rocket science but a firm start. We used flashcards to learn new words and practice letter sounds through out the day almost every day. So, when he was able to read those words this morning. Mom did a happy dance. Then we sat down to read The Dark At The Top Of The Stairs. I guess tomorrow our game will be to pick out all the MICE and MOUSE words on a page since today's was 'at' 'the' and 'a.'

Now on to Saenz's progress, we are deeply stuck inside the quagmire of learning how to convert fractions to decimals. When I am on break with Zephyr; Saenz and I are at the white board practicing. Saenz has a tough time with keeping his work aligned properly (dysexlia) so, he gets frustrated easily with math. So I have to keep reminding him that he is not going to fall behind here and we will keep practicing until he gets a firm grasp before moving on.

I think this bothers him because feels like a failure. When in fact, I know he is getting the hang of doing the problems and has made progress from just a week ago. So the rest of this week we will focus on science, art, history, and grammar to give his brain some reset/focus time.

My sister, Tammy is back in the hospital. She did okay on Saturday through Sunday and then had another seizure or stroke on Monday. Needless to say, she is back in different hospital this time. No word yet on how she is doing. I am concerned since, I detected her slurring her words the last time we spoke. Later, I will call my neice to find out the lastest test results. So just keeping her in my thoughts and prayers and hopefully the doctors will find why she is having such difficulities with her health.
